Stayed here between 31 August and 07 September 2011, enjoyed the tremendous lakeside situation, found the staff (including the female owner) to be friendly and helpful. Took the advice of a previous reviewer and requested balcony lake views above the pool, but, on arrival we were told that we had rooms at the other end.
We were two couples, one of which had a middle first floor room, which was reasonable for space but had a bed with a solid end-board which could only accomodate someone below 5ft 10in. height and I am 6ft, so no go.
Myself and my wife therefore had the other (box) room, right at the very end (forgotten the number), which was hardly any more than a single room with totally inadequate storage for two people. The en-suite was the smallest, narrowest that we have ever come across, I had to leave the door open when I was washing in the sink and it was almost impossible to sit on the toilet, as your knees locked against the wall. (See photo)
We did request a room change, but we were told that it was not possible because of other bookings. We did inform our holiday rep, but they were not able to help.
As other people have said the breakfast is very limited and I would have killed for a piece of toast and a boiled egg whilst we were there. Again, the evening meal was only adequate and it was a bit difficult deciding early morning what you think you would like ( and then you've got to remember in the evening what you chose!)
The price of a bottle of beer was scandalous and I would advise ordering the house wine as a more economical option for mealtime.
Having said all that, I'm hopeful a lot of the other rooms are quite good, the general ambience was quite friendly, the male owner helpful (with good English), the terrace bar and restaurant views spectacular and Menaggio a delightful little town.
Just try to avoid the first floor box room!
