With Varenna and Bellagio now overrun with way too many tourists (thanks Rick Steves!) the other towns around Lake Como offer a much more relaxing, low-key alternative to stay in at this little bit of paradise.
Our room had a view of both the lake as well as the main town square (only down side to this was the noise during the day but we were usually out and about anyway). The room was well-maintained with adequate bathroom and storage facilities. Air conditioning (it was over 85 degrees during our stay) was also well-maintained. Elevator is small in the Euro tradition but hey, at least it works! There is a wonderful deck on top of the building which, 3 stories up, has a great view of the lake and town.
The hotel takes credit cards for payment but curiously its restaurant doesn't. This is something we noted again and again on our recent trip. There seems to be some sort of evolving issue between hosteliers and the credit card providers (or their banks).
If you're not traveling with your computer and need some internet access the only internet cafe in town is at the youth hostel. But it's not expensive and you can always enjoy a very inexpensive limoncello there.
Very convenient to the ferry as well as the road to Switzerland. Also, the little hop-on/hop-off train stops just right next to the hotel. There is no regular train service to Menaggio, you have to commute to Varenna or Como via ferry to get to a train station.
