We stayed at this hotel from 4th to 11th August 2007, and will never be returning !
The accommodation itself deserved the 3* rating it had been given, as the rooms were very well appointed, and comfortable, apart from the rock hard mattresses. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and could speak good English.
However, I would not give the food half a star. The buffet breakfast was exactly the same every morning, with no fresh fruit on offer, even though there were bananas and grapes growing wild right next to the hotel. My youngest son asked very politely one morning if he could have some more orange juice, as the waitress was clearing the buffet away, and she replied sharply
" Finito". So much for Sicilian hospitality.
The evening meals were even more disappointing, with only two choices of starter and main course, and no choice of dessert at all ! The starters were generally good, especially the lasagne and aubergine casserole. But the main courses were dire, for example one evening, sweet and sour rabbit was on the menu, and unfortunately my husband and two sons decided to try it. When it came, it truly defied description - it was a pile of bones in a horrible stone cold gravy. They could not eat it, and the waitress took the three full plates away, observing " you no like", but did not offer to replace it with anything alse. They all went hungry that evening. We used to walk down to the seafront to buy a gelato ie: Italian ice-cream, as unbelievably, this was never offered as a desert at the hotel. The only evening meal we enjoyed was NOT taken at the hotel at all, but at a local restauraut called 'La Cambusa', which was first class. Compared with bed and breakfast deals we had found, we worked out that we had been charged in the region of £500 for these below average evening meals at the hotel - what a total waste of money.
The hotel has no swimming pool, but we did not think this was an issue as we were led to believe that the hotel was "situated directly on its own beach". This is completely UNTRUE - it is a rocky outcrop, where you swim at your peril, as my husband and children did on the day we arrived, and came out of the sea with grazes to their legs, and backs. I asked the holiday rep from Airtours if we could be moved to another hotel because of these injuries, but due to high season she said that availability would be a problem, and we would be charged for the privilege. She added that we had not been told that it was a sandy beach, no, and neither had we been told that it was a rocky beach. I have just looked up the definition of the word 'beach' in the Oxford dictionary, which states: Water - worn pebbles or sand - sea-shore or lake-shore covered with these. There you have it, a black and white misrepresenation - this hotel is situated right on the seafront, but it does NOT have a beach. You have been warned !
