We visited Chianciano Terme from 26th May - 2nd June and stayed at the Hotel Majestic. Our rooms were clean and pleasant and to the side of the Hotel. The maid service was daily with fresh towels placed as a matter of course. We were on half board and the breakfast was continental buffet syle, and the evening meals were served by the polite and efficient restaurant staff. We had no issues with the food or excellent service - and there was a good selection of local wines - all sampled during our week! Although the hotel was advertised without the pool services, the weather was excellent, and one day we ventured up to the roof- top area where we decided to spend an hour relaxing in the sun. The roof-top area was disappointing, and did not resemble the brochure picture at all. There was very little garden furniture, and the whole of the area looked shabby, with its imitation flooring in need of changing, and a drained pool which looked as if it had accumulated rain water over the winter, which had changed to a grey-green algae covered liquid. It would not have taken a great deal of effort to have made this area presentable, with or without the pool being opened.
Just off the reception area of the Hotel is a small lounge, with a grand piano, a bar area (not enough staff to cope at busy times), and a large lounge ideal for reading or socialising. We had no complaints about any of the staff members who were pleasant, curteous and efficient.
We would stay at this Hotel again, and it would benefit the Hotel to sort out the small details which can make all the difference to some customers.
A walk to the old town is recommended, but stroll along the paths which overlook the farmland with its rolling hills - it's well worth it. We would recommend a little delicatessen type shop in the old town, for a light lunch. Inside the shop they have tables and chairs on the balcony to the rear, with lovely views over the valley. Elsewhere in the new town there are the spa gardens which held evening concerts when we were there, and a tea dance in the open air under a large awning (in case it rained). At the top of the new town is a copper domed modern Church - not very impressive inside unless you like modern high tech buildings, but the smaller chapel attached to the front of the building is lovely and peaceful, with beautiful depictions of the 12 stations of the cross. Not too far from the church there is a roundabout where the buses turn. The coffee shop here is used by the bus depot staff and this is an ideal spot for coffee and light meals - good value for money too!
The tourist information centre is opposite the Grand Hotel in the town. The female staff are deserving of praise, and provided maps, bus and train information and helpful suggestions for visiting the tourist attractions. We loved seeing the countryside by public transport, and visited Florence, Sienna, Orvieto, Pienza and Montepulciano. My husband and I had already visited Florence and Sienna previously, but we all agreed that the town of Orvieto with its meandering streets and beautiful hill top Cathedral was quite special - a little gem without all the hustle and bustle of either Florence or Sienna.
We would visit this area again and had a very enjoyable holiday.
