“Excellent Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2007

The Hotel was clean, the service was faultless and the staff were friendly and all spoke good English. Unlike some of your other reviewers we did not find the hotel noisy and our air-con worked smoothly. We were on the top floor facing the lake with marvellous views. We dined one night in the hotel restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Unfortunately there was a wedding reception on the other night which meant that we had to dine out. We had been looking forward to another meal - apparently they had recruited a chef from a top London Hotel. However this turned out to be fortuitous since they recommended the Glicine Taverna about 5 minutes up the road which turned out to be another deliciousmeal. Altogether an excellent place to stay. We would stay again.

“Great location & great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2007

Booked into lake view room and was given the first floor room with a balcony. Could see out onto the lake from our bed and was very nice. There was fireworks on the lake and managed to see it from our room.

Staff were excellent, very informative and spoke good English. We had our tyre burst on our arrival and they were very helpful to get it fixed. They helped give recommendations as to what to see and eat nearby.

The breakfast was simple and nevertheless the view overcame the small selection, but having said that when we later went to stay at the hotels in Lake Maggiorre and Milan in the same trip, this was actually better.

We had dinner on our last night and were pleasant surprised, again, small selection but the quality was very good and price was reasonable. Definately would recommend if you're feeling lazy to walk 10 mins for dinner.

The hotel overall was a good find, good spot to explore around the lake and the Lugano lake, 2 good restaurants within 5-10 mins walking distance and nice pool to swim in after an exhausting day of exploring/driving.

Don't bother to eat in town tho, the food isn't great. Also there's a Trattoria that's meant to be excellent. We tried and it's alright, nothing to hype about!

“Great views, not very quiet though.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2007

We booked our stay at Albergo Asnigo directly via the hotels website and found that the responses were quick, polite and very informative.

We arrived for a 7 day stay for the 2nd week of our honeymoon in Italy, we took a bus from Como train station and then a taxi up the mountain to the hotel (do get a taxi up there, it will take you forever to get there on foot with heavy luggage, costs about 10 EURO) we checked in with very little fuss and to a very warm welcome, the staff instantly recognising our surname and congratulating us on our wedding which we found very warming.

We made our way up to the room where we were immediately drawn to the balcony and the most stunning views of Lake Como, the mountains and all the hilltop villages, we were really taken aback with the beautiful scenery just outside our window that it was a good hour before we noticed the very kitsch decor of the room itself.

As idylic as it sounds there are always usually drawbacks and we found plenty with this hotel mainly due to noise and quite a bit of it unnessecary. The hotel itself is quite compact and we were above and to the side of 'La Terrazza' the hotels restaurant, the noise coming from a busy kitchen was understandable, we got over that quite quickly, but the most annoying thing was the waiters clearing up after dinner, dragging tables and chairs accross the patio at gone midnight to set up for breakfast the next day and if that wasnt bad enough it was done again very early the next day, this happened everyday and we werent imagining it, basically your sleep was dictated by the laziness of the waiters who couldnt be bothered to lift the furniture, we felt that this was disrespectful to everyone staying there as it was very loud.

Going on to the restaurant, it was only available to us 3 nights out of 7 (it is always closed on a Monday) due to various events, weddings, kids parties, coach parties etc, the food itself is very tasty and is worth dining there at least once but we found the presentation of the food a bit over fussy, breakfast also was delicious, a vast, good quality selection of bread, meat, cheese, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, pastries etc, if you do stay here then it would be advised you find out well in advance as to when you can actually eat at the restaurant as you may be disappointed to find out that you may have to venture out to find something to eat, as the hotel is quite remote.

The position of the hotel itself is worth mentioning, right on a blind bend in a narrow road, be prepared for cars to sound their horns to warn other they are approaching, it does happen quite alot during the day and night.

As I mentioned before, the decor in the room is quite dated but that didnt concern us too much as we had the wonderful view from our balcony, there were other problems with the room itself though, the air conditioning unit didnt have a remote control, apparantly you have to request one, when we did the unit was about as much use as a chocolate teapot due to the positioning of it, high up on the wall, bearing in mind we were on the top floor and the temperature was mid to high 20's, all the air conditioning did was to keep the ceiling cool, we soon abandodned that idea and resorted to more traditional methods of having all the windows open to create a through air draught. On our 4th night the sattelite receiver inexplicably stopped receiving, we mentioned this down at reception and they seemed to think that it hadnt been working for days even though it had only just stopped, strange, one other point of note is that 2 days out of 7 we had been out and arrived back at 4p.m only to discover our room hadnt been made up as the maids were only just getting round to it.

Special mention has to go to Fabio and his team at reception, we experienced impeccable courtesy and manners by them and they were incredibly helpful to us in explaining things to us, printing stuff on the internet for us and generally making us feel very welcome.

Our conclusion is this; do stay here, it has the most amazing views of Lake Como if you are lucky enough to get a room with a balcony and the staff are amazing and very friendly but dont expect total peace and quiet, be prepared for everything I mentioned before, we had an amazing experience here and it certainly didnt spoil our honeymoon in anyway, we just found the place unexpectedly and unneccessarily noisy.

“Great Hotel - Amazing Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2007

I stayed at the Asnigo for three nights. The views are amazing, and the rooms are quite comfortable. Breakfast is more than adequate. A variety of breads, meats, cheese, cereals, yogurt and fruit. My room was two story, loft style, with a queen bed upstairs. A freind stayed in their standard queen room, it was quite nice as well. The staff went out of their way to help during our stay. The hotel is atop a steep hill/mountain, I wouldn't suggest climbing it with luggage (even without is difficult).

“Wonderful view of lake Como”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2006

We booked through an Italian hotel website well in advance (6 months) and this was all we could get. However we were delighted when we arrived to find a clean, well run hotel in what we thought was a better location than the harbour area that we had initially wanted. We had booked the standard room, and we were given a room with a wonderful view of lake Como. Admittedly it was not big, but large enough for us and it had a little balcony just big enough for two with a fabulous view. The view was enhanced by the use of very big windows which not only gave us fantastic light, but enabled us to see all the beauty of the lake and the surrounding hills/mountains. The bathroom was well appointed, clean with a good shower, although small. To get there we had flown to Milan and caught the train to Como. From there we crossed lake Como by boat to Cernobbio. A wonderful start to our weekend break. On first arriving at Cernobbio we set off to walk to the hotel, big mistake. It is a rather long way up the hill/mountain (quite steep and bendy road) at the back of Cernobbio (1Km plus). We did not know this and we could have taken a taxi from just beyond the boat station which would have cost us very little. There is a footpath in the hillside from the hotel to Cernobbio, and even though I do not like heights it was no problem, up and down , for me. Breakfast was the usual Italian/continental style. We had dinner once and it was very good. Just round the corner from the hotel there is a super restaurant called Trattoria del Glicine (mainly frequented by Italians). Wonderful freshly cooked food (the chef only used fresh local produce) and very impressive wines.
The hotel itself was extremely clean and well presented and the staff were all helpful and very friendly. Whilst we were there they were building a swimming pool and this will be an excellent addition.
Cernobbio itself is a pretty place, but quite expensive. However it is a good place to stay to explore Como (wonderful shops) and to take boat trips up lake Como and stop off at the other villages to explore the sights and perhaps have a meal and a drink . Do go to Bellagio it is very different. The boat journeys are cheap and the best way to get around. If you train it from Milan like we did, do call in and visit the best baker/pastry shop just next door to Coin (department store) for your focaccia to eat on the journey home. They are absolutely fabulous and very cheap! Nothing you can get at the airport will match them for quality or cost.
We will certainly go back to the hotel Asnigo.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, friendliness and the wonderful views.
  • Disliked — The distance from Cernobbio itself, although this was not really a problem.
  • Tips/Secrets — Be prepared to take a cab to and from the hotel on arriving and leaving with luggage.
