After a very long evening drive from Venice to La Selva, getting rather lost as soon as we left the motorway. Had some terrifying driving around the hills to get to the hotel at night where although the speed limit is 70km/h there are extremely sharp bends which are not seen at night. No cats eyes anywhere needed it seems in Italy! I recommend that you get to the hotel during the day, or that you go at the very maximum 40km/h to get there from the motorway. Long straights followed by extremely sharp bends without warning.
Arriving just before midnight local time, we were glad to find the hotel still open and waiting for our arrival. The lady at the desk was very pleasant and very polite. Seemed very happy to welcome us to La Selva, with big smiles despite the late hour. We were even offered food, and drinks. The room was spacious, clean and simply decorated. We had a rather nice balcony and a very clean bathroom. As we were quite exhausted we collapsed in bed to awake to beautiful weather and stunning views of the mountains.
Breakfast was really lovely, with cakes, croissants, pain au chocolat, tea, coffee & hot chocolate made on demand, a series of cereals, toasts and cold meats buffet were lovely. Many fresh fruit and fruit salads. All the food seemed fresh and tasted very good. The only demand would have been freshly pressed orange juice, and cold milk for the cereals.
The restaurant downstairs was absolutely delicious, filled with all local dishes and meats cooked to perfection, had a lovely pasta dish followed by a delicious beef salad. So fresh, so well cooked, such great aromas. Desert menu was a little short, but very good nonetheless.
Although the website states that the hotel is 30 minutes from Florence, it actually is closer to 45 minutes away - going on to an hour depending on traffic. Although reception was very good at letting us know where to park for free and which roads to take to get there quickest.
The only downside to the hotel was the noise insulation from other rooms, we could hear other people having showers and using the toilet. The fan in the bathroom was quite loud. And the lack of air conditioning - although a fan is provided, it doesn't quite do the same as air conditioning. A swimming pool would be a fantastic addition - it seemed as though part of the back of the hotel was made to host a swimming pool although never actually constructed which is a real shame.
Amenities were provided to expectations and replaced gladly by the management. Very simple hotel, decoration was extremely simple, but made the room feel bigger.
All in all, very pleased with our stay - very good value for money and just plainly lovely.
Room Tip: Get a room facing the steep incline to the hotel, cool in the morning, and just about right in the e...
