We are a family of 3 and stayed only 1 night. We didn't have breakfast, as our flight from Gatwick was leaving rather early ! I can't remember the room no. we stayed in - but it was right on the top floor, up 2 flights of stairs, on the right, looking out to the right hand side of the Guesthouse. The room had 3 single beds and had sloping ceilings. There was a large, clean en-suite, with a large bath. Soap and towels were included. Upon closer inspection of our room, there were tea/coffee making facilities and a small old fashioned rubber hot water bottle hanging in the en-suite, with instructions of how to use it (most odd) !! On the sloping ceilings were full of cob webs (eek) and all the skirting boards were filled with dust. My bedside lamp wasn't working, but they did offer to try and get another one, if |I wished. The problem I had was with my particular single bed. Firstly, I noticed that there was NO mattress cover on it and also no pillow case protector; yet there were on the other 2 beds. Even though all my sheets and pillowcase were clean, I was a bit apprehensive about the blanket and bed cover ! After only having been in my bed for an hour or so, I began to feel "pin pricks" all over my body and then I began to itch !! I got up, turned on the main light, pushed back all my covers and checked for bugs - but nothing ! I got back into bed and within ten minutes, I was itching like crazy, having a feeling that I was being bitten by mossies !! I woke up my partner, told him the problem and asked to swap beds. He did so, as he is not susceptable to mossy bites. After about half an hour, he said that his arms began to itch ! I noticed that parts of my body had tiny red marks and so I had to fumble about in my suitcase for my mossy spray (something I didn't think I would have to use in England in November) !! Consequently The 2 of us couldn't get back to sleep and had a very restless night and didn't feel at all refreshed, given how early we had to wake up for our flight ! I suspect that there were bed bugs in either the mattress, the blaket, or bed cover. The decor of the reception area and in fact the whole house was very "dated" indeed - I would say they were stuck in the "70's" ! The owners were EXTREMELY friendly and graciously willing to do anything to make our stay comfortable. The set-up of payment, car parking, key code to get in and out of the property and a small security box to retrieve your car keys were all very efficient. They recommended a selection of nearby restaurants to use for our evening meal. I couldn't complain about my bed because it was in the middle of the night and we left too early in the morning, in order to speak with them. I do wonder a) if anyone else has had this problem in this room, or in fact any other room and b) how often do they renew their mattresses - if at all ??
