“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Having visited and stayed on the island many times we were looking forward tothis break.

Reading the website, we had high hopes for this hotel. Our impression from the outside on arrival was as expected as was our entrance and friendly welcome. However as we progressed up through the hotel it was another story. Decor poor and furnishings appear tired and worn. There seems to be too many 'bodge jobs' with no forethought about the overall impression. All doors and corridors reminiscent of being in an old school together with the smell.

Our room was on the second floor accessed by the narrowest and steepest staircase I have ever come across in a hotel let alone a house - definitely would be a problem for many people. The room (15) was a small attic room which looked nothing like anything on the website, quite basic with an 80's feel about it. The view was out onto a scruffy yard.

During our first night it rained and we were kept awake with the rhythmic drip, from the poorly maintained guttering, onto a corrugated roof below - a little like chinese water torture. It did not stop until about 5am!

The ensuite was roomy and fully tiled but sadly let down by dated furnishings. All the sealant around the sink and bath was so poorly applied it looked as though it had been done by a 5yr old. Mould galore was abundant in all the sealant. Plus the bath panel was broken and falling away from the bath. Someone had tried to remedy this, again with the 'magic' sealant - what a disaster! Laying in the bath revealed a rather unpleasant grimy brown sludge all around the underside of the sink which obviously had not been wiped for a long while.

We had dinner in the restaurant on our first night which we enjoyed, however it was spoilt by the ambience. The dining room is large so I couldn't understand why they crammed everyone into one corner around the service door. We were unfortunate enough to be placed right next to the service door where there was a constant stream coming and going and banging of doors. We never experienced the 'dining with a view' experience as only the few people allocated a table here get to see it. For some strange reason you have to sit at the same table every time, for every meal - a bit like Butlins I imagine - so no new experiences there. Breakfast was OK, nothing special. Nobody came to take our order so I never tasted anything other than cereal and toast.

We did not use the games room, pool, exercise room, squash, sauna or treatment room, only went and had a look. The smallish indoor pool area looked a little dated and more could be made of the games room. Exercise room was poor and squash court had seen better days. Before arriving I had intended having a spa treatment but in view of all of the above was put off. I did not see the interior of the treatment room which mary be very nice but the door to it, off the games room!! looked like a grubby cupboard.

Obviously I would not stay here again or be able to recommend it to anyone else.

“A nice Winter Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Stayed with friends for a 3 night break in late November 2011. The Isle of Wight is mostly closed down for the winter, so some attractions aren't available, and the whole place takes on quite a desolate feel. However, the Luccombe Hall Hotel made the stay very enjoyable even though we were on a special deal which included free ferry travel from the mainland. We didn't feel as though we were being treated any differently had we paid full price. The hotel dates from the 1800's, but has been added to over the years. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with ample storage space, TV, complimentary tea & coffee and free wi-fi. The deal included breakfast and evening meals for the entire stay, both of which were plentiful and ordered from a very good choice menu. The staff were very friendly and helpful with any questions we put their way. I honestly can't fault the place, and would be more than happy to return at some time for another visit. It will however have to be an inclusive deal because the ferry can be as much as £170 if booked separately at the wrong time of the year.

“Sink or swim?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I feel mixed about writing this review as it was essentially a freebie as a result of renewing my insurance ontime. That said, the hotel rightly treated all guests as equals and should see us all as potential repeat business.

Echoing many of the comments on here, the customer service (especially from the reception staff) was exemplary but too many of the hotel's features are tired and faded.

The room was comfortable and spacious but the sealant around the bath was very dilapidated and ugly. The bath panel appeared to be broken. Although you could see staff were trying the gardens and shabby interiors needed more work to recover former glories.

I enjoyed the pool (a novelty for me) and, although it looked in need of a refurb, I couldn't see any hygiene issues alluded to elsewhere. The games room seemed well stocked but sadly no kids around to enjoy the facilties.

As I had a room only deal I had to pay for breakfast. Sadly, this was overpriced despite the smoked haddock. The toast was burnt and the tea too weak. Staff were attentive but ,unfortunately the damage had been done.

Overall, I feel there is room for improvment, which with the will of the attentive management and good customer service standards, may enable them to achieve it. It is a cracking coastal location and has a loyal following. It deserves to have a much better review than the one I have been able to give.

“Very Relaxing Break”

I booked this for a birthday present for my husband, and it was a giant leap of faith, as I had no knowledge of anyone staying at this hotel before, but I was very glad I did. The hotel is small and very friendly, the staff are extremely helpful and the accommodation is good. I booked an upgrade to a room with a balcony and seaview and this really added to our stay with uninterrupted views over the gardens and the sea. Although there is not an exensive menu the food was excellent and anyone eating here should be able to find something that they liked. The Steak and Ale pie we had on the first night had the best puff pastry I have ever had. My daughter arranged directly with the hotel to pay for dinner on the second night of our stay and this was actioned without a hitch. We enjoyed staying on the Isle of Wight and the coastal path walk to Ventnor is very beautiful and not too taxing. This is accessed by turning left out of the front of the hotel & takes approximately 2 hours. If you're keen on walking, I would highly recommend this. The hotel also arranged our ferry crossing which made life very easy. A great break and good value for money.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a seaview or seaview/balcony room.
