“A poor choice”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Having experienced some excellent Marriott hotes in the UK I was so disappointed with this one. The room as small, the size of the wardrobe in such a small room was claustraphobia inducing. I had to move the bed in order to make space to open the ironing board. There was no sports TV channel in the room unlike other Marriotts, a small and poorly equiped gym and below quality food. The room overlooked the car park, not good. I regret choosing this and won't be making the same mistake again.

“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Very good hotel in excellent location. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.Rooms are standard Marriott, so you know what to expect. But nevertheless, they were clean and well appointed. Breakfast was a particular feature in terms of the fry, the rest was not very exciting. Good parking in a city with expensive city car parks. Would stay there again.

“Exploring Durham”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Very well situated hotel so that you can leave your car & walk everywhere in this small, beautiful city. Hotel staff very pleasant & helpful. We were in the new (relatively) wing overlooking the river. Very comfortable room although bathroom rather dated by today's standards. Also walls were very thin so we were disturbed on the first night. Health suite very good for a city centre hotel with a swimming pool you could actually swim in!

Room Tip: Ask whether the older part of the hotel has thicker rooms if you want undisturbed sleep!

“Hogmany in Durham”

Spent 3 nights one of which was the Gala dinner New Year's Eve. Staff were friendly, the room was clean and comfortable and the dinner on New Year's Eve was lovely. Unfortunately, after dinner we were disappointed that the bringing in of the New Year was a bit of a damp squid. We expected the dinner would be followed by disco and dancing but we couldn't get near the disco and there was no seating in the bar. We were lucky enough to find two seats in the foyer but other people were scrambling around looking for chairs and tables to move into the foyer. There was no party atomosphere with lots of peopole complaining. In fairness to the staff when I mentioned it the next day the duty manager she was great in the way she dealt with it. Although we were disappointed the Gala Dinner didn;t live up to expectations we would return to the Marriott, Durham.

“Xmas Party 17 December 2011 - Highly Recommended”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

A truly classic hotel, spacious, luxurious & comfortable rooms. Stayed here as part of a party of 12 for a Xmas celebration meal. After an easy efficient check-in we started the festivities with afternoon drinks & nibbles in the bar, where staff were attentive and extremely polite & friendly. Nothing was a bother to them. In the evening we had a private room and were waited on hand & foot by very pleasant friendly staff. The meal wasn't great but acceptable, tasted better & have had worse at other establishments!!!!!!!
Buffet breakfast was fantastic, everything was hot with plenty of choice and staff ensured food was replenished promptly.
All in all it was a great event and one that will be repeated annually.
