“Not up to expected standard.”

I am usually a fan of the Brend Hotels and the Imperial does have all the good features of the chain especially the usual service. The staff cannot do enough for you. However, beware in this particular hotel of accepting an "Imperial" room. The one which we had, and others which I saw, are small and dark with very limited wardrobe space. In all my travels I have never slept on such a hard bed. The floor would have been softer. Not really up to Four Star standard.

Room Tip: Do not take an "Imperial".

“It's ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

We stayed here for two nights whilst in the area for a wedding. I think I'd probably summarise our stay as 'ok'. There really isn't anything spectacular about the hotel, and nothing really that made me think I would do my best not to stay here again.

Generally speaking the room we had, which was a deluxe river facing room, was large, clean and complete with everything we wanted. The major negative is that the room was awfully hot - radiators off, window open, spring day (i.e. not warm) and the room temperature was edging towards the unbearable, hence the provision of the fan in the room. It's obviously a problem - try to stay in a room at the back during the summer I would say.

Overall, no real complaints, but do watch how much you spend on a room. They're all priced too high for what they are, and what the hotel is in my opinion.

“This hotel is excellent.”

Superb food and service. Nice to see high standards which is sadly lacking in most hotels, eg dress code. No scruffs here thank goodness. Can see why a few comments were bad. I would highly recommend this hotel.

“From another era”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

Did not really enjoy the place. It is outdated rather than old fashioned and needs revamping. However, staff very pleasant. Ideal for a big group or wedding. Rather expensive for the rooms offered. Popular with the over seventy-fives ( if they are feeling their age!) Ground floor ladies toilets worth a viewing. They are stunning but contrast starkly with the rest of the decor when you emerge. A bit of a mish-mash of styles.

“Traditional Sunday Lunch in Style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

We booked this lunch, as a treat for my wife on her birthday, the day before and had no trouble getting our choice of times. The reception was good and they clearly expected us..... the bar was deserted (unexpected on a bank holiday sunday at 1.15pm) but the service was personal and prompt.

When we went through to Dinner the Restaurant was a little under half full. The Menu was Varied including a set menu at 17.50 for 3 courses and another half a dozen each of starters and main courses with suppliments. The usual Roasts were their but so were a range of other dishes.

The food was well cooked and presented and the service was up to the usual Brend standard (young people who knew their job and did it well!)....only one slip.....I guy in suit (so I guess he was management!) served my wife her starter without looking at her (or the table) and while talking to another member of staff .... not what I have come to expect from a Brend establishment and not as good as his staff!!

Less than £150 for sunday lunch for 4 with a round of drinks and 2 bottles of wine, in comfortable, traditionally up-market surroundings. Excellent value.
