“Charming people and building, handy location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

All in all, we had a lovely short stay here with our three year old. Location is great, very near but not on the seafront.

As another contributor says there is a lot of street noise overnight if you end up in a room overlooking the road - traffic and revellers long into the night.

Free parking in the building opposite which is very handy, although potential to get boxed in if Bakehouse and their other guest house is busy.

Michael and the team running the hotel very approachable helpful and pleasant. Alex very welcoming. We had a fairly major problem in the room which was fixed on the day with no fuss.

Lots of choice at breakfast which was fine.

We got a decent late deal so don't think we paid quite as much as some other contributors here.

And we went midweek and the guest house was very quiet. As some other contributors suggest here, there is a chance things might be a bit more fraught if the hotel was fully booked.

So, don't expect a super-premium experience. This is just a good guest house run to use as a base for exploring Dorset.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have baths, just small ensuites

“Very good and could be better with a few extra touches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

Michael the owner very friendly but run off his feet. He owns this and The Letterbox across the road so spends his time juggling between the two which doesn't always go according to plan. From the outside it doesn't look 5 star - needs painting and smartening up - once inside very good - not immaculate. Our room was on the top floor of guesthouse spacious and quite comfortable. Location absolutely central for the quay, the Esplanade and the central shopping area. With that of course comes noise from traffic, people etc. Breakfast good but overlooked a heap bin bags. No credit card cheque or cash only. Parking is at the back of other guesthouse across road. We did not know this and paid to park in the car park next door. Needs to keep on top of housekeeping to ensure rooms serviced to highest standards.

Room Tip: Choose side or rear room if noise bothers you

“Excellent rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2011

We were a bit concerned having read other reports but were pleasantly surprised. Michael the proprietor was charming and couldn't have been more helpfull. The free car park was also a real bonus as it's very difficult to park in the centre of Weymouth. We stayed in the penthouse suite which has king size bed and stunning bathroom. The whole property was tastefully decorated without loosing it's cottage charm.

“Disappointing,overpriced stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

Arrived at hotel and were not expected. Had to call mobile number to be let in. Bin had not been cleared out. Very small en-suite to double room.Felt very rushed at breakfast as x1 staff complaining about huge work load. Only cash accepted and no receipt offered or received. Only positive aspects of stay was very warm welcome by Alex and location. Certainly not a 5* hotel.

“Too expensive, too little attention to detail”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

The actual room was nice, but too expensive for what it was. and at £165 a night I expected much more. We stayed for two nights but had to make up our own room in between - no one came in to make our bed etc. Breakfast was a let-down - cheap ingredients and not very good cereals for adults. I understand that a staff-member had quit earlier that week, which meant that it was terribly understaffed and there was too much for the one staff member there to do. The complementary drinks tray - while a very nice idea in principle - actually meant two bottles of Echo Falls wine (an Iceland speciality in my experience - about £3 a bottle!). It all seemed a little slap-dash for my liking, even though it is a charming building. The penthouse is only half of the top floor, not the whole thing. The bed was very comfy. Rather than pay more to (hope to) get luxury next time which doesn't arise, I'll pay less and go somewhere else.
