“A wonderful B&B in Dufton.”

Returned from a long day of walking to home made cake, tea and two wonderfully friendly dogs Monty and Shep !
Ray and Frei our hosts were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble .
Our rooms were spacious, immaculate ,beautifully decorated and the beds were very comfy! The breakfasts were very substantial, home made breads, yoghurt and smoothies, fresh fruits and the cooked options, although meat free ,were delicious!
We are recommending Hall Croft to friends and family and would not hesitate to stay here again.

“Friendly guesthouse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2009

This is an excellent B&B where we stayed for 2 nights at the end of walking a section of the Pennine Way. Very welcoming, excellent food and friendly service. The only slight negative was the limited menu in the local pub though the portions were v.generous.
Thoroughly recommended

“Hall Croft - what a great choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2008

My husband was walking from Stoke on Trent to Scotland, picking up The Pennine Way at Edale and finishing in Kirk Yetholm. We were fortunate to choose this beautiful guest house and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Ray & Frei are very hospitable and from the minute we arrived we were made to feel at home. The setting of the house is perfect and the views stunning. The guest bedrooms are well equipped and extremely comfortable and, although we are not vegetarian, the breakfast was superb with home made produce - bread, yoghurt, preserves and fresh fruit. Cooked breakfasts - non meat- are available and looked delicious. I cannot think of anything which was not 1st class and I would recomend it to anyone without hesitation. Nothing is too much trouble for Ray and Frei and you even get a warm welcome from their 3 friendly dogs! We stayed at some lovely establishments along the 320 miles of John's walk, and Hall Croft was up there with the very best.

“Fantastic B&B, Friendly and Comfy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2008

I was lucky enough to get a cancellation at Hallcroft for the Appleby Horse Fair which I wished to photograph. On arrival we were greeted by Ray and treated to a lovely home made cake and cup of tea (been promised the recipe)! The situation of the cottage is lovely with fantastic views. The room was lovely with tea and coffee making facilities, television, and nicely decorated. The bed was extremely comfy well needed after a long day at the fair. The breakfast was lovely - freshly made smoothies and yoghurt as well as fresh fruit, cereals, juice and home made bread. Cooked breakfast was also available and looked delicious, the cereals, fruit, toast and yoghurt was enough for me. In the village there is a lovely pub which serves food. I shall certainly be back. Ray and Frei are lovely hosts and I recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for a very reasonable guest house.

“Excellent B&B in Eden Valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2007

This is an excellent (and very reasonable) B&B in Dufton, a beautiful village at the foot of the Pennines and on the Pennine way. It's a large and interesting Victorian house with great views and 3 very comfortable and well-furnished guest rooms (2 en-suite, the other with own bathroom, all equipped with DVDs and TVs), plus a guest lounge.

We've now stayed there 4 times (for the Appleby Jazz Festival and walking trips). The owners (Ray and Frei Walker) are extremely friendly and obliging and the (vegetarian) breakfasts are a delight: lots of home produce, fruit, eggs and mushrooms however you want them etc. Carnivores need have no fear re the food!; they will be very well fed. It is popular with Pennine Way walkers and with a pub (The Stag) nearby for good evening meals and real ale.

If you've not tried this area, it's a delight. Ideal for a short or longer break. Good walking, pretty villages and close to Appleby: a really attractive town on the River Eden. The (much busier) Lake District is only 30 minutes away.
