We headed up to the Cairngorms to catch the end of the winter season, for some fun in the snow. I have stayed at Ardenbeg bunkhouse in Grantown twice before, once on a winter skills course for young people, and again later that winter with friends. I chose to stay here again with my parents because I enjoyed the previous two visits a lot, and there is equipment hire available for people without their own crampons etc.
The bunkhouse is a great base for walking/skiing/other activities in the Cairngorms, as it is not far from Aviemore, and has a good selection of walking equipment available to hire for small amounts of money, such as mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axes, helmets, rucksacks etc.
I have stayed both in the downstairs accommodation and upstairs, and both are lovely. The bunkhouse is clean, nicely decorated, welcoming and homely. The kitchen facilities are shared between those staying at the bunkhouse. A large cooker, fridge, a small freezer, plenty of crockery, cuttlery, kitchen towels and the like are provided in the upstairs kitchen. A big table by the window surrounded by benches provides a great place to eat and chat. There are 2 bathrooms with a shower in each upstairs, and similar downstairs. The bedrooms have bunk beds in them, which are clean and comfy. The rooms are amply warm enough, which can be said of the whole bunkhouse. The rooms have different numbers of beds in them, which room you are allocated will depend on the size of your group and other groups staying at the bunkhouse.
There's a big garden around the back and side of the bunk house, which I haven't spent much time in having only visited in winter, but which has lots of trees and birds.
Rebecca the owner is very welcoming and helpful. Arrival at the bunkhouse seems to be ok at any time of night or day.
A few minutes walk takes you from the bunk house onto the main street in Grantown-on-Spey, which was quiet during winter when I have visited. There are a few pubs, shops, cash machines. I have only visited one pub, the Craig Bar, which serves a range of real ales and plenty of whisky, and has a good atmosphere.
For exploring the Cairngorms, especially in the height of the winter season, it might suit some people to be closer to the Ski centre, for example to get very early starts, and to be guaranteed a place in the car park. A hostel or bunkhouse in Aviemore or on the Ski Centre road might suit some people better in light of this, but it's only a short drive (30 minutes or slightly more) either by the main road or the back road from Grantown to Aviemore and the Ski Centre.
My favourite aspect of Ardenbeg is the homely feel, I always feel that I could happily stay for weeks if I had the time as it's like a home away from home. Meeting other people staying there and chatting about their adventures round the table is always enjoyable. The facilities are excellent. My Dad was a little worried before we arrived, as his vision of bunk houses was a rough place to kip at night with a stove. Ardenbeg is bright, clean and comfortable, but retains the spirit of a bunkhouse and outdoor adventure.
Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

I very much appreciate your comprehensive review, in particular the fact that you mention so many of the facilities around and about the hostel. This will definitely help future visitors realise that although Ardenbeg Bunkhouse is located in the Cairngorms National Park, we are still within easy reach of Aviemore and have plenty of shops and locations to eat within walking distance of the hostel. Many visitors find the stock of winter mountaineering equipment useful to hire directly from the hostel, giving them more time on the hill for mountaineering. Thanks once again for taking the time to review the hostel and I am glad you have enjoyed your visits here.
