“Dog friendly; good beer; Internet connection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 February 2008

Great place for us - we used to live nearby, but now live in France and came for a holiday with our dog. Perfect!!

Good walks in the country a few minutes away - a few miles from the county town of Oakham, Rutland.

The accommodation is in a separate block, clean rooms, well appointed for the price - with a Wifi computer connection.

The pub sells very good real beer, has an open fire, has good food, and lots of locals in the bar at night. It also had wonderful home made pickled onions!!!!!

We booked directly with the pub - this turned out to be £20 per night cheaper than any so-called "deal" via an Internet hotel booking site!!!

“Just ok”

I have just spent 2 nights at the Old Plough. Chose this place, on the strength of the previous reviews. I found it just ok, nothing special. The staff made us very welcome but the room was small for a double, no chest of draws or wardrobe just a rail to hang up clothes, no bath and a shower that had a broken shower head.
As mentioned in the two previous reviews all road traffic can be heard plus there was the barking of 2 dogs on both nights from a rear garden of a house across the road.
We chose the wine and dine package and the food in the evening was good. At £99 for two per night DBB including a choice of wine was not too bad, but the overall experience will not have us rushing back.

  • Liked — The friendly staff
  • Disliked — The room itself and the noise

“Possibly the friendliest Pub in England!”

We were made to feel relaxed and very very welcome from the minute we arrived in the bar. Having stumbled across The Old Plough on the internet, meaning to book somewhere else, we are really glad we didn't. We made the choice to book their dinner, bed and breakfast rate, and we were really impressed, as it actually includes all three courses, coffee and a bottle of house wine (6 to choose from)! Unbelievable value. We would recomend to anyone staying in the area.
Being a crisp, pickled egg, beardy train spotting weirdo, we really enjoyed the local beer as well....

“Very pleasant pub accomodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2006

The Old Plough is in a lovely village setting, and has recently been refurbished to provide overnight accomodation for guests. The rooms are very clean, modern and comfortable, although still in keeping with the old building. The bar itself is that of a traditional English pub with open fire, and the restaurant is in a conservatory area at the back. We found the food to be of very good quality, if a little more expensive than we would normally pay, and the service was friendly. A good place to stay if you are wanting to visit Oakham and Rutland Water.
