“Very disappointing.”

We stayed at Gower's Close in April 2007 and weren't disappointed by the lovely building. It is a typical thatched cottage just as you'd wish to stay in when visiting the Cotswolds. I am sorry to say that this is as far as the Sawday's (this is who Gower's Close advertise through. Sawday's promote themselves as advertisere of "Special Places to Stay") description matched my experience. Our room was pleasant and comfortably furnished, but very cold without heating on a frosty spring morning, and the bathroom was in need of updating.

Our hosts were pleasant but not particularly warm or welcoming except to constantly reccommend the local pub for a meal. I think they must have been on some sort of commission!

Breakfast was the biggest disappointment as we were virtually told what we would be having: bacon and scrambled eggs. No full English breakfast here. One of us was lucky to get some museli offered as it was requested the night before, but if the others had decided cereal may be an option in the morning it was not offered.

Overall, I felt our hosts were frugal in their hospitality and gave as little as possible with regards to food and heating. The experience had little similarity to that described and I am sure there are much nicer and better value bed and breakfasts in the area.

  • Liked — The house was very pretty.
  • Disliked — The meaness.

“Good B&B in rural oxfordshire”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2006

Large thatched b&b in a village west of banbury. Beautiful garden. Judith and John are good hosts and you will love Daisy the bearded collie. We were greeted with a welcome cup of tea and biscuits on arrival. There is a pub in the village which is supposed to be good but was closed on Monday when we visited.

Cooked breakfast was perhaps not as extensive as received at other places but quality if fine and there was plenty of cereals and toast plus tea/coffee and juice.

“Magical Thatched Cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2005

This lovely cottage, situated in a small hamlet near Banbury in the Cotswolds, gives you a real country, thatched experience. The room was huge with windows opening onto the incredible garden. The ensuite bath and an enormous deep bathtub.
The garden is completely magical and the owners, Judith and John, warm, lovely and very helpful. The delicious breakfast was cooked to order. It is a great base from which to tour the Cotswolds. The house next door was in the process of being thatched, wonderful to watch. Highly recommended if you want an authentic stay in a thatch.
