“Fine but overpriced”

My wife and I stayed here overnight for a concert last week. We booked directly with The Hotel rather than use Latebookers because the owner stated that the Latebookers price only related to two nights or more.
We asked for, and got, a quiet(ish) room and my request for feather pillows was met. The Hotel is certainly convenient for The Opera House, Pavilion Gardens and the town centre and the car park is adequate
Both owners were warm and hospitable, the beds were comfortable and the breakfast tasty.
My only negative comments would be that the tv is minuscule in this day and age and the room looked as if it could do with an up-date.... our room looked as though it had mildew on the thick walls of this old building.
We are widly travelled and I think a tarriff of £75 per room would be fair and earn this place 10/10. For £100 we wouldn't stay here again

Room Tip: We stayed in room 104 which was quieter than other rooms that seemed to get traffic noise more than...

Enjoyed 2 night stay at the Alison our room was comfortable but the mattress was not !! shower needs new grout as it was black in some places, but shower worked fine.had tea /coffee/hot chocolate/biscuits in room.breakfast was really good staff were polite .we had a drink in the hotel bar when we got back in one night and was relaxing. we don't think the room was worth £78 a night. It was a five minute walk to the centre a lovely walk through the pavillion gardens.

“Good Service-Could Use Some Updates Though”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

First I'd like to say that from start to finish, the customer service was exceptional. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, the room decor was rather dated and would benefit from some painting and new flooring (the carpet was stained in multiple places). As dogs are allowed at this establishment, there was quite a bit of black dog hair on the carpet, which was slightly off-putting to me as I'm not a dog owner. Perhaps identifying set rooms to allow dogs, or getting flooring that can be swept would help remedy this issue. This hotel is in a good location, close to the gardens and a short stroll into the town centre. Finally, the breakfast was very good. Overall, if a few updates were made and the dog hair issue was resolved, I'd be more than happy to stay at this hotel again.

“Makeover needed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Just stayed one night and although the bed was comfortable, the rest of the room was a bit depressing with an old tv not able to get a radio programme.
Shower was a trickle and grout was all black in places, paint has been peeling off and then just overpainted. On the plus side, the breakfast was very good, in the nice conservatory and it was very convenient for the town.

“a hotel of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2011

whenever i read other peoples reviews I always exclude the best and the worst. then i make up my own mind based on the others on whether i will stay there. this hotel is what you would expect from a traditional town hotel that is family run. the most important thing for me is that the staff are friendly and that the hotel is clean. Certainly they were here and although others may say the place is dated. Well i suggest they continue to stay in budget hotels where all rooms are identical and characterless and give room for those who enjoy such hotels that have character.
We paid £80.00/night for a double room (Room 209) and stayed there for three nights.the room is more than adequate size with a bathroom which has a small bath. Though my 16st frame still managed to lie in it. although the stairs is rather narrow to access the top floor, for those who found difficulty, there was a lift for the suitacases.
Breakfast was more than adequate and I can only commend the staff for keeping the cereals fresh and contaminant free in their plastic containers. (what's wrong with tuperware?)
We had one evening meal there. nothing paricually exiting on the menu and was disapointed that the vegetarian option was not homemade. The traditional pork dinner though was up to standard.
there is a small bar serving a variety of drinks. No draught beer but they do sell bottled real ale. checking in and checking out was very efficient with all details sorted out easily on arrival and departure.
the location of the hotel in buxton is ideal for walking into the town and buxton itself is a good base for exploring the peak district. Shame is that the railway only goes one way to Manchester.
Generally we enjoyed our three days at the hotel and believe it was good value for money. Give me this type of family run hotel even with its minor problems rather than boring budget hotels that are popping up everwhere.
