“Don't be put off by first impressions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Unusual, quirky - indeed I would say "odd" impressions on first arrival but............if you book a suite you get the Ft Sq of a modern two bed-roomed flat (excluding a kitchen) with oldish but comfortable furniture; much could do with a refurbish but all is clean but old fashioned. First night we gave it an even chance!

We "ate out" but breakfast was excellent and cooked to order and served apart from the first course juice(s), cereal(s) etc etc - lots of good places to snack or take a meal in the town.

Lift looked rickety but worked OK to our first floor and the posters were a good amusement for the 20 second trip.

Staff very helpful in letting you know where to go - I recommend you see what is on at the Opera house. Nearly forgot, we experienced no problem parking but it was October.

I recommend it as good value for experience.

Room Tip: First floor "suite" - tern left out of the lift and go as far as you can - room on the lef...

“quaint, quirky and definately not the run of the mill, even if its a little over flowery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Showing friends from Holland round the peak district last August, spent 2 nights here.

Hotel is a little old fashioned but definately having work done on it, back when we were there there was scaffolding up to the front. Which did reduce the amount the car park could hold, it was tight, second night I parked on the road.

Room was large, yes a little faded, but the beds were firm but comfortable on the whole even if a little too firm for my liking. Crisp white linen on them, this hotel doesn't appear to use duvets yet. Bathroom small but perfectly workable, clean even if like the room a little faded. Shower had good pressure, there wasn't a bath. Walls of the room as if alot of the hotel, is covered with film stars, pretty sure ours was Meg Ryan. The upstairs hallway had a variety of stars all holding guns, was more like the shooting gallery, a little spooky lol.

Don't bother eating elsewhere (we did the first night and regretted it) the food is resonably priced, large portions and extremely well cooked. Breakfast was pretty much the same, great cooked breakfast with huge choice of cerial, jams & preserves. Only comment I would make, even though its a midweek, breakfast finishing at 9am in the 6 week school holidays could do with changing especially as it was a virtual stampeed into the breakfast room at 8.30am.

Best part about this hotel is its staff, it does make the place, receptionist very chatty friendly and oh so helpful.

Would definately stay here again.

“Quirky but good value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Just spent a night at the Buckingham. We had a very pleasant stay. After reading some of the reviews I was put off slightly but having stayed there have no doubts about staying there again. The room was a very good size & when I opened the bathroom door it was almost as big as the bedroom, although could probably do with updating . As for the breakfast, we were spoilt for choice, there was so many cereals to choose from and a variety of jams & marmalades not to mention full english & toast. As we were going to the opera house that evening it was ideal as it was just a few minutes walk away.

“Unusual, well-located and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I stayed at the Buckingham Hotel over New Year whilst visiting friends in Buxton. The hotel is unusual in terms of decor, with pictures of film stars and unique feel to it (we had the Cameron Diaz room with 7 famed pictures of her on the walls of our room!). However, it is perfectly comfortable, the staff were excellent and the breakfast great. If you want a change from anonymous-style Holiday Inn type hotels, then this is the place for you. Only slight criticism would be the pillows -if you don't like them hard, then bring your own!

“Don't be put off - it's a great place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My wife booked this hotel for six of us (two adults, two teenagers, two grandparents) for a couple of nights over New Years Eve 2011. I must admit that having read some of the reviews on here I was sort of dreading it! We have stayed in loads of superb hotels (many 5 star) over the years and I wasn't keen to spend my New Year in a place that has been slated over and over in many reviews, as being pretty dreadful!

All I can say is DON'T BELIVE THE HYPE! We had a fantastic stay.

All staff that we met were ultra-friendly and incredibly helpful! The rooms were very clean and although our family room / bathroom could ideally have been a little bit bigger we really couldn't complain as the price was very, very good.

Yes, it is not your typical blandish Premier Inn style set up, and yes there is a lot of very loud and flowery wallpaper :o) Yes, the main staircase is a bit creaky - and yes the lift is filled with loads of flyers for theatres and shows (actually not very tatty - so I guess it has been updated)... But this all adds to the character of the place. Have a look at all of the autographed photos of film / theatre stars on the wall opposite the lift.

The breakfasts were fantastic (there were individual / small boxes of cereal if you want them by the way), and the staff were again ultra-attentive and keen to help. Oh and a highlight for me, the real ale bar was absolutely superb! Beer was very well kept - and such a range!! The hotel is also literally 10 mins walk from the town centre and very handy for the Opera House (which was one of the reasons for us picking it in the first place).

So well done to The Buckingham Hotel - I am sorry that I doubted you. We all had a great stay and I am sure we will be back again at some point in the future.

I just feel very sorry for the hotel having to put up with so many poor reviews in the past. Then again, some people seem to just be "professional moaners" who look to find fault in everything ... but I do question someone who spends time on their holiday / weekend stay taking photo's of the loo or finds some minor issues to just moan about ...
