We (9 people, 2 families) stayed in Hotel Plaza for 2 weeks back in 2006. As soon as we got there we all struggled with our luggage and the staff were quite miserable and didn't help us. Our apartment was reasonably large with 2 good sized bedrooms although one of the lights didn't work! The pool was great for the kids and adults, it was clean and was quite big and there was a park nearby, which the kids enjoyed.
We hired a mini van and visited Corfu town which was very busy and had some nice shops. Our family also hired a motorbike and I took our 2 children (seperately of course) on a ride and they seemed strangely interested in the nice area around them.
The entertainment club was great for teens, adults and toddlers (soft play area) one child was 5 months and too young to play in the childerens play area while the other kids (aged 8 - 10) were too old to play in the soft play area (although they wanted to!) and there was nothing else for them to do at night. They actually got told off for playing in the soft play area late at night even though there was no little children around and that's all they had to do. After that all the reps ever did was shout at our kids and they just thought they were trouble makers when all they really wanted to do was have fun.
The shops, pubs and restaurants near-by were perfect for all of us and spent most of our nights in a particular pub (which had a giant tv!). It rained for 2 days but the sun we had was lovely. We visited Aqualand water park which we all enjoyed very much, there was an incident when the kids got stuck in one of the water flumes but it was a laugh and it ended well.
The worse part of the holiday was when all 9 of us had a tummy-bug and the kids especially were being sick every night, which was more of a problem for the baby. We had to ask for more toilet paper which wasn't good and the maids didn't change our sheets which were covered in vomit.(Lovely!)
We told the reps that we were all ill and we were starting to dislike the holiday slightly and they actually apologised for shouting at the children and one rep (her name was Emma) called a doctor for us and treated all of us very well.
I visited this area in the 1980's and the sewage was a problem then and was in 2006. The pipes were above ground and were leaking in areas.
Overall I think that Corfu is good for families (if you don't get ill!). Also, if you have never been to Corfu but are planning on going then i'd advise you to go to Corfu town.
