Just returned from a week at the Astrolabe with my wife and three grown-up/teenage children. We have stayed in many Greek 3-star hotels before, most of which were fairly basic, but the Astrolabe is not like that at all. The rooms are twice the normal size and more like studio apartments with lounge area and kitchenettes, and the shower rooms are similarly more spacious, as are the verandahs. There are only 11 rooms, some of which are actually suites with separate bedrooms, and for the first half of our stay (last few days of June) we were the only guests. The staff were very helpful despite speaking little English (Simon and Aristea, the owners, who speak excellent English, arrived later in the week. They are delightful people and bent over backwards to ensure we were happy). Breakfasts were delicious, the selection very wide with both cooked and cold selections (including bougatsa and spannakopites - our favourites!), and so abundant that we never needed any lunch. The pool was lovely, and gardens beautiful, with the scents of lavender, rosemary and oregano everywhere.
You need a car - the beach within 100 yards or so is stony with no sunbeds or shade, but there are pebble beaches, some with bars, umbrellas, etc within a few minutes' drive. Sandy beaches are not a feature of this part of the island, though there is apparently one at Pili (which we didn't go to) about 30 minutes drive away, and definitely one at Gregolimano (which is where the Club Med is), about an hour away. Avoid Agia Anna beach on the north coast which though very long is a mixture of grey sand and stones and not very attractive, though the 25-minute drive through the wooded hills is very pleasant
The nearest taverna/restaurant is about a mile away from the hotel - Bella Vista, excellent. About 3 miles away is Limni, a really charming and picturesque seaside town with a choice of places to eat around the sea front - Platanos Taverna was good. The same distance in the other direction is Rovies, not so attractive as Limni but with a selection of eateries. NB credit cards are not accepted in many restaurants, and there is no ATM in Rovies, though there is one in Limni.
If you like pebble beaches (water is crystal clear and no sand getting everywhere) and don't mind a short drive to the beach and for your dinner, then this place is just about perfect. The hotel in particular is outstanding for its class and price, and fully deserves a 5 star review.
