One of the reasons for staying at the Palazzo Rimondi was the number of excellent reviews on here. In one respect I agree whole heartedly that the staff are brilliant, all very friendly and helpful. However, I thought the accommodation itself left much to be desired. I have holidayed on Greek islands several times, and am aware the standard of accommodation can be basic. I also appreciate with the age of the hotel buildings some ‘quirkiness’ is to be expected, but I found the following:-
• The “well equipped kitchen” referred to in the room description odf my holiday consisted of a small 2 ring electric cooker and a small refrigerator. There was 1 small saucepan and a utensil for making Greek coffee. When I queried not having a kettle, I was advised that, as I was in a ‘deluxe’ room, a kettle was not provided. During my stay, therefore, I used the small saucepan to boil water.
• The bathroom was tiny (approx. 2m x 1.5m), the brass hand-held shower attachment over the small bath was badly tarnished (as were the other brass fittings) and the soap dish was hanging off the wall.
• The upstairs sleeping area (accessed by a steep, narrow staircase) had a wooden panel about 0.66m high at the front of the balcony. There was not a guard rail on top of the panel which, to me, constitutes a significant health and safety issue, as there is a distinct risk of falling over into the room below, especially if you got up in the middle of the night and was temporarily unsure of your surroundings.
• One of the wardrobe doors would not open fully due to the proximity of a bedside table, and the other door would not stay open, presumably because the floor was not level. It was not possible to open the drawer fitted at the bottom of the wardrobe.
• The swimming pool was tiny (admittedly as can be seen from the photographs) with no room at the side for sun-loungers. When, after a few days, I discovered there were some sun-loungers on the roof (again accessed by a steep, narrow staircase), I found them to be of a poor quality.
Speaking to two couples who were there at the same time, they had both changed their original rooms for various reasons. On a more positive note, as I stated earlier, the staff are great. The hotel's location in the middle of the old town was very convenient for the fortress, the harbour and the serviced beach was a 15-20 minute walk. It did take a couple of days to get my bearings in the labyrinth of narrow streets, and beware the price of Guinness in the Irish pub just around the corner from the hotel - 7 Euros a pint!
Room Tip: Maybe the standards in the new annex are better!
