“Marvelous”

I 've been staying several times in the Marble Hous Hotel and every time the hotel looks nicer: new painted, modern showers ... Last time there was wifi and you can use a laptop for half an hour and print gratis your boardingpass! Super.

In tree minutes you walk in the parks from the Philipapus-hill, where you have the best view on the acropolis with its parthenon. And in 5 minutes you 're in the metro "Singrou Fix".

The hotel is at the end of a dead end road in a quiet neighborhood, so it 's calm, even if your in the capital of Greece!

“Cool, quaint, marble rooms in a cozy corner under the Acropolis!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Marble House Pension is at the end of a cul-de-sac in a very quiet neighborhood, 7 minutes walk away from the Acropolis. It's tucked away in the corner, under cute trees, flowers, and plants, making it cozy, safe, and affordable! The lobby and stairs are all composed of marble, so everything echoes, but it adds to the cool climate inside the building, as well as the "Greece" atmosphere. We went to Athens in June, so it was baking hot; this place offered rooms with AC for just 9 Euros extra per night. ( We tried to bypass the ac the first night since we only use ours at 79/80, and we live in Florida! But, turns out we needed it just a little, so got hardly any sleep in return; don't skip the AC!) The owners are a family and their son, the latter of whom is extremely helpful, speaking English well. There is a code for after-hours return, so its pretty receptive to all types, although, like I said, this place is definitely for those adventure-seekers by day and party outside by night; don't bring the after-party here!
The room is average size; we had plenty of floor space for our luggage. I don't think there was a TV. The bathroom is petite and the shower small, but perfect for the affordable price we paid. I would say this room is perfect for adventurous people who don't like to sit in hotel rooms while in extraordinary cities, also for people that can maneuver in a smaller bathroom well.
Towels and toiletries provided. (Which is rare in Europe; I collected as much as I can from each hotel each night to provide when we were out elsewhere.)

Room Tip: It's at the end of a cul-de-sac so there's no traffic noise; you can hear other apartments a...

“Great location but old, hot and smelly & not as pictured on website”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

I booked 2 nights in a double/private bath room at Marble House 6 months in advance for my husband and I. Going by positive lonely planet and trip advisor reviews and the great price and location I thought i'd snapped up a good deal. However were in for a very rude shock when we checked in! We arrived at the hotel on a hot 40 degree day and were told there was only one room available for us which was on the top floor (about 4 flights of stairs or so up) and completely unrenovated (the lower levels we passed were as pictured on the website) with no air conditioning and two tiny single beds located in a tiny room at opposite ends of the room! The safe didn't lock and the very tiny hot and smelly 'private bathroom' was located outside of the room/across the hallway that required a lot of jiggling of a very old fashioned key to get it open each time you had to access it. We paid 50 euro for this room which is cheap but after our experience I think it should be half that! We have stayed in budget accomodation across the world including South East Asia and we both agreed this was by far the roughest hotel stay we have ever had -it made a $10 a night room we stayed at in Saigon look luxurious! Breakfast was also not on offer at this hotel during our stay, sheets and towels were not changed or even touched during our 2 night stay nor were the limited bathroom supplies. There were other budget hotels located in this fantastic area that looked a lot better. If you do book a room at this hotel ensure you specify that you want a double bed on a renovated floor and air con (if you want it). The staff at the hotel were nice and helpful but this did not make up for the terrible accomodation.

“Great value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

We stayed here in early November and found the location very handy - especially the excellent directions from the airport provided with the email confirmation of booking. A few minutes easy walk from Syngrou-Fix metro station and only ten minutes to the Acropolis, Plaka and due to proximity to metro, you can pretty well get anywhere else across Athens and to Piraeus. The room rate was excellent - five nights for 200 Euro paid upfront in cash or you will need to relinquish a passport until payment is made. This provided a small double room with private ensuite and small balcony. It was very adequate for those who don't need to spend too much time in their room and that is what visiting Athens is all about! There is basic breakfast available for 5 Euro per person but there is an excellent place for good coffee (called Masai and turn left at end of street and you are there) and a most wonderful bakery on Dimitrakopoulou Street just on the top side of the square where Syngrou-Fix station is. (Drakou I think the square is called) which sells every variety of sticky Greek pastries but also does some excellent filled real bread rolls to take with you for a picnic lunch between museums. There are two supermarkets in the vicinity. One is on Dimitrakopoulou street about 3 minutes walk from Marble House and the other is a couple of blocks on Falirou Street which runs parallel to Dimitrak. but almost beside the cul de sac MH is on. Both up uphill from MH towards Plaka. Both sell basic food items and some alcohol. There are also some good fruit stalls and some wine/spirits shops in the vicinity. The closes cafe strip for eating seemed to be at the Syngrou-Fix station square but there are many places slightly further afield nearer the Acropolis too. The only downside of the accommodation was that as it has marble floors etc, noise in the stairwell and hallway is very clattery and you do hear your neighbours. Street traffic noise is minimal though. Sheets and towels were replaced every second day and the host family are very friendly and helpful.

Sadly many businesses were very quiet due to low tourist numbers. The protests were in full swing and in fact is all came to a head politically at the time we were there but it did not affect anything we did though we did notice a strong police presence.
Athens is very affordable at the moment and entrance tickets were very well priced to allow for repeat visits if you get overload from seeing too much great stuff all at once. The highly highly recommended new Acropolis Museum for example is on 5 Euro entrance fee. The excellent National Archaeological Museum near Ormonia metro station is only 7 Euro for entry fee. If you happen to be in Athens on the first Sunday of the month, entrance to these places is free (including the combined Acropolis ticket which is normally 12 Euro). Crowds were small everywhere except at the Acropolis mid morning. I recommend going from midday as by 2 pm it is almost deserted. All the bus tours seem to be there at the start of the day then fade away with no newcomers later. The site is open from 8 am to 5 pm.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have small balcony which can be pleasant to sit out on. Room 13 had one.

Great location for a short stay. We stayed there for 2 nights. Friendly reception. Good location within walking distance to Plaka & Acropolis. Great if you're just after a clean and simple room after a long day of sightseeing.
