“Blood on the blanket....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

We stayed for 4 nights and although we found the staff and the location excellent the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The bathroom was clean however there was mould all up the shower curtain. The bed was uncomfortable and the blanket had hair on it as well as unidentified browns stains but the worst was the dried up blood we found splattered on it.

There were a few seedy people loitering around the general area of the hotel but generally it was a good area to stay in and had some good nearby restaurants.

There was internet available for usage but it was quite expensive with a poor connection .

Although it was cheap we didn’t feel it was value for money as we have stayed in cheaper hostels that provide a cleaner environment.

“would not return (and we are not that picky when travelling in budget)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

Excellent location and good price (got a deal of 2nights for 78eur). The staff was friendly. The room had old furniture which did not really bother us as we chose budget hotel, but what really got us was an odd smell in the room. Also there were human hair (also pubic!?)on the bed (otherwise seemed clean)...We would not return to this one for sure! There was also some construction work going on and noise coming from the hallway during the night (3am)..
Breakfast was included, buns, fresh croissants, ok cheese, very odd ham, Tea&coffee, Ok yogurt

fernando correia, reception at Hotel Residencial Universal, responded to this review

In name of the hotel, I apologize for any inconvenience on the guest stay. Concerning the comments the guest has made: yes we are remodeling and there is some noise at the moment, but is restricted to the law permitted hours between 9,30 am and 7 pm (any noise after that hour would be from other guests staying at the hotel, with is hard to control), but guest are advised of the fact when checking-in. the odd smell mentioned by the client, it's probably related to the same construction due to paint, varnish, and cutting of ceramics that leaves a odd smell, but when clients complain about it, we try to change them to a different part of the building. All this problems will be finish as soon as construction finishes, with is schedule to the end of spring. As per the hairs the client claims to have found, if they were in the linen, they probably came with the sheets from the laundry, if the client had warned us about it, the sheets would have been changed, and the laundry notified. Most of clients complains, in general, can be fixed at the moment if reception is notified; and by doing so, a stay can be mush more pleasant, and the idea that you get from the hotel completed the opposite of the one you'll get if you say noting and complain later.

“Perfectly acceptable for the price.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2010

Adequet is the best word to describe this hotel. The location is in the city center which is perfect and easy to walk to anywhere for a person of low to moderate fitness. Having read some of the reviews I would urge potential stayers to remember the price at E35 a night (incl. a good breakfast) you do get what you pay for. the room was perfectly clean and although the bathroom didn't look very nice it too was spotless. Reception was friendly provided maps, manned 24h and spoke perfect English. If you are looking for cheap good accomodation then I would recommend here. It was a little noisy at about 11pm and 10am two times but that can not be blamed on the staff or the hotel.

“a hostel might be better... gnarly! only good thing is location...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2010

this place does NOT live up to the good reviews it's been given and the photos are misleading. the place needs a MAJOR upgrade. the showers are like toilets. the toilet water runs and you have to wrestle with the handle to get it to stop. there was loud construction, loud employees yelling in the hall and loud neighbors mostly due to thin walls. the hallways and stairwell are creepy. the room smells like something we couldn't sort out.. mold or simply just old. there were random hairs found all the time even after a cleaning. it's one of the first places i seriously checked the bed for bugs like a maniac because it just felt like it may be infected. the one and only good thing about this place is the location- THAT is it!

“Great location and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

We stayed at Universal for 4 nights and had a good experience. The location is excellent, on one of the main thoroughfares of the city and also very close to Sao Bento train station which was really useful for day trips away. There are bakeries, eateries and cafes nearby so you wouldn't need to go too far away if you're in need of food! The reception staff were formal but polite and helpful when needed. The room was small but clean in general though the rugs on the floor looked a bit dirty. However the bathroom was of a good size and the shower was good. The room did not have much of a view and it was pretty noisy - late comers into the hotel along our corridor were sometimes loud and we could hear them. The breakfast is very basic but we made the most of it as it was included in the room price. For the location and the value, can't really argue with it as we would definitely go back there if we are in Porto again. The city is beautiful and there are loads to see in neighbouring towns, so there is no reason for anyone to spend too much time in the hotel room anyway!! There is a long flight of stairs up to the entrance, though there is a chair lift, so visitors with mobility problems would have to keep this in mind.
