This is our 8th visit to Grindelwald and the Belvedere. The hotel looks after you discreetly but with attention to every detail. The food is superb, breakfast has a very wide selection of hot and cold dishes, the evening meal consists of the best food and ambience we have experienced in Switzerland. We had a table at the picture windows overlooking the north face of the Eiger which provided a magnificent vista to accompany the fine food and wine.

Our room faced the Eiger and after returning from a day walking it was wonderful to relax on the balcony watching the colours change over the Eiger face as para gliders sailed toward it from across the velley at First. The room and bathroom were spacious, linen and towels were renewed daily and the facilities were plentiful and worked well.

The pool and treatment areas were excellent, clean, well organised and very comfortable. The public rooms were welcoming, comfortable, and there were fine views from the terrace.

This area of the Oberland has fine views, excellent transport and a great variety of trails to suit all standards of hiker.

We can thoroughly recomment this hotel which is family run and really cares for its guests and all are anxious to and succeed in making your stay memorable and one you will want to repeat.

Reading your review makes us happy. You know, working hard, 7 days a week, and far too many hours, that's all no problem, if we can read reviews like yours, if we see, that the effort pays off in happiness of our guests.
Thank you so much for what you are doing for us. Also our staff love seeing and reading reviews like yours. You know, we just had the pleasure of offering our head of maintenance and his wife (head of floors) a trip to Australia for their 20th year of working for the Belvedere. Our guests love to see the same faces at the reception, at the restaurant and elsewhere, when they return. And many of our guests have also returned for 20 years and longer, year by year, some once, some even twice or three times per year.
All the best

For a medium-size hotel, this has quite a 'family-run' feel to it. And that's it's strength and weakness.

On the down-side we couldn't get a meal at 9pm and when we did get a set meal the next night, though superb and lavish, the six or seven courses meant we couldn't eat again for days. The room, and the hotel generally, seemed to have been recently decorated and designed by someone not from Milan. You realise how even operators of cheap chains get the edge in this respect.

The only rooms worth having are the Eiger View ones and with that sight (and the balcony) it seems churlish to criticise, but they don't quite have the feel of a top-notch hotel. And the mountain view is slightly spoilt by the main road right in front, though it's several floors below, especially if you get a high room.

The outdoor hot tub is lots of fun and the connected pool is pleasant and not small. The terrace is a wonderful place to sit with a drink pretending to have spent the day walking in the mountains.

Although handily located five minutes from Grindelwald Station, it's the 'wrong' way so you may have trouble finding it and the nightspots (if only) of Grindelwald are ten to fifteen minutes away, back past the station.

By the end of our short stay we felt like we knew the staff personally. They went out of their way to be helpful, from the welcome drink to the friendly departure. This is the sort of place that must have regular visitors from around the world. It would be unfair to say older people would enjoy this most. But just don't say 'boutique'.

Dear Sir
thank you so much for the report to Tripadvisor. I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to have the great pleasure of seeing you soon again.

Yes. 9pm is last order at our restaurant at the Belvedere. As most of our guests tend to eat early, you would find yourself alone in our restaurant after 9.30 pm or 10.00pm. We have a restaurant in town, there you can eat until midnight or longer. No need to go to bed hungry.
Our rooms, not facing the Eiger, are facing the Wetterhorn and also have a balcony (with exception of 1 room). Many guests actually prefer that view, therefore it is probably pretty good too. Look at the picture shown of the hotel by tripadvisor, how do you judge that view ? ?
Don't say boutique you wrote. If you look up the definition of "Boutique Hotels" at Wikipedia, you will find out, that yes, we are one.
Most important however that you enjoyed your stay, thanks so much for having chosen the Belvedere for your stay in Grindelwald. The Hauser family, owners since 1907, when the hotel was first openedt, is looking forward to welcoming you back.

My husband and I started off our Swiss & French honeymoon at this wonderful hotel. My main reason for wanting to book the Belvedere was because of their indoor pool and outdoor hot water jacuzzi, which would not disappoint. We spent one of our two afternoons just lounging in the pool area and hanging out in the hot tub, looking at the gardens and up at the mountains. Since the temp was only in the 50s while we were there, this was a perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Our guestroom was somewhat plain, but the view of the Eiger more than made up for it. We loved opening our windows and balcony doors and breathing the crisp mountain air during the night. We got a real kick out of the "pillow menu" as we had never seen such a thing before. The breakfast buffet (included in our rate) was excellent and the servers were very patient with us as both days we were the last guests in the breakfast room (late risers!).

The only negative is that we were supposed to have someone waiting for us at the train station when we arrived. I even called the day before our departure to confirm, and they said they'd be there. Instead we had to flounder around an unfamiliar town, trying to find our hotel. Finally I walked into the Hotel Regina to ask where the Belvedere was located. This was after an 8 hr flight and 3 trains.... in the rain, and lugging two heavy suitcases up a hill. As you can imagine, we were not happy. We thought the hotel would compensate us somehow but I also didn't want to make a big deal out of it since it was our HONEYMOON and our first day in Europe!! They did make their van driver take us to the the train station at 6 a.m. the morning we departed. I'm not sure if they normally would have done that considering it was so early.

We are planning on returning to the area next June, and I think we will again stay at the Belvedere. That outdoor salt water hot tub was just too much!!! And that's not exactly something you can find just anywhere.

Thank you so much for writing such a wonderful review despite the bad experience you made. I am really very, very sorry, that there was nobody at the station when you arrived. I am glad, that we could at least compensate it a little by taking you to the station at 6 am. (they usually start their shift at 7am. but we would have taken you of course anyhow).
You know, we have no driver, our hotel is too small. Our porters do that job and usually everything works our fine. But may be, when you arrived, there was a problem at the hotel and the porter did not realize, that it was already time to get to the station or the problem was such, that he forgot. (To be honest that happened even to me) Please apologize and my advice to everybody reading this and needing our hotel bus anytime in the future, please call the hotel immediately if the car should not be there, when you have ordered it in advance. You may of course also call when you are at Grindelwald train station without having told us in advance, that you need a car.
We hope that you will return soon and wish you all the best

This hotel is in a great position, wonderful views of the Eiger and grindelwald valley.
The service is top class. The food in the restaurant is amongst the best we have ever had in a hotel. The staff couldn't be more friendly. There is really nothing to criticise.

Glad that you enjoyed it so much. Please tell all your friends and please come back yourself. You recommend our hotel for winter sport. Yes of course, winter is very important in our area, we have three great skiing areas, lots of toboggan runs (also the longest one in the world), snow shoe hiking and lots of winter hiking trails. Our area is ideal for couples where one is a skier, the other one not. They both go up the mountains together, one is hiking the other one skiing, they join for lunch and then separate again.
Grindelwald, is only a 100 min. drive from the airports. And being only 60 min from Bern and 80 min from Lucerne it is also ideal, if the weather does not co-operate. These cities are also in winter worth a visit.
But Grindelwald is worth a visit all year round anyhow, especially for visiting the Jungfraujoch "Top of Europe" on UNESCO World Heritage list. And having dark green meadows, full of flowers in summer and snow covered mountains in the back, WOW, the summer is also just wonderful.

See you soon, hopefully and keep well.

We stayed in a Junior Executive room facing the Jungfrau for 5 nights last June. Breakfast and dinner were included with the room. The dinners were amazing. Some of the best food we have eaten anywhere. Better do some serious hiking to work those off.

The staff could not have been nicer. From the porter picking us up at the train station to all of the front desk people who helped us with advice as well as arrangements for paragliding.

The rooms furnishings were a liitle outdated and the elevators were quite slow but the views are outstanding. The hotel is a 10min walk from the center of town, but that makes it very quiet compared to some on the main street.

The rooms offering the very best panoramic mountain view are definitely the ones on our 5th floor, where you stayed. These rooms have been newly built in 1994, the new wooden floor has been put in in autumn 2007.
Two new elevators are planned to be added on the outside of the building. However the building law in Grindelwald does not allow any elevators on the outside. That means that we have to prolonge the building to get them inside. However our building is already longer than what would be permitted. You see, we try to solve our elevator problem, but it is everything but easy. Once we can add them, three new junior-suites will be added on the 5th floor too. Keep the fingers crossed, that we get that building permit soon.
Buy the way, using the stairs keeps you fit and if you have been enjoying too much great food, then may be it is even a good idea to avoid taking the elevator.
You know, up to 2 years ago, a regular Japanese visitor to Grindelwald, was still skiing at age 96. When asked for his secret he answered. " I am visiting my son every day in his office on the 5th floor and so far I have never taken the elevator. The day I will need the elevator I will stop skiing".
Thank you so much for your wonderful review, thank you so much for recommending our family run and owned hotel. Thanks to people like you, we stay in business and may be we will be able to pass it on to one of our children. That would then be the 4th generation running it.
All the best
