Dom is located in the center of the old pedestrian part of St Gallen; the location can't be beaten: walking distance to the train station and surrounded by the beauty of the town, with lots of shopping and restaurants around. We had an ensuite triple room for one night. The room was beautiful, comfortable and clean. The hotel has a modern decor. Some of the rooms have to share the bathroom on the floor, but I believe they are cheaper. The breakfast was delicious too! Hope to be back!

P.S.: we were surprised to find a good Indian restaurant nearby (2mn walk)

We spent one night here and after seeing the price tag at all other hotels in the area, I decided to go with the budget room without the private bathroom, as it was just for one night.

We were in room 450 so our room was on the other side of the wall from the bathroom which at first worried me as you could hear every person enter, etc, but it turned out to be fine. We never had to wait to use it or anything like that. We did not use the shower facilities.

The rooms are basic, but that's what I was expecting so it was fine. It's very dorm-room like with a desk between 2 single beds, a close, a sink and then a TV. It was all we needed for the single night. It was also a nice touch to have 2 bottle of water in the room when we checked in.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a great location so close to the main old town area and the cathedral. The hotel is a bit hard to find if you're going by car, but they do have a handful of parking spots and we got the last one when we arrived around 6pm.

The hotel has a nice decor in the public spaces, a modern feel, and the breakfast room was especially cute with the tabletop flowers. The breakfast was definitely one of the better ones we've had in Switzerland, the same variety of meats, cheese, yogurt, breads, etc, but you could also order a french omelette which they made quickly and was really good. They also had fresh pieces of fruit and I feel like usually it's only a bowl of diced fruit that usually I won't go near.

The credit card machine was broken when we checked out, but luckily for 120 CHF, I could pay in cash.

While the rooms aren't the best and in any other country it would be ridiculous to pay even this much for that kind of room, for Switzerland it's excellent value and as long as you know what to expect, you should be happy.

Location - couldn;t be more central, just a stone's throw from the abbey. The small parking lot and the wi-fi are - wait for it in Switzerland - FREE!

You also get spick and span ultra modern rooms whose amenities all work, great artwork throughout, a decent sized lift and an honesty bar. Best of all the Dom is staffed by really nice people. I wish there were more reasonably priced hotels like this: five stars all round and bring on Dom Zurich please.

If like most visitors to St.Gallen, you're here to see its magnificent Benedictine Cathedral & the famed Abbey Library (Stiftsbibliothek), then Hotel DOM is perfect as this UNESCO World Heritage Site is just a stone's throw away! The Hotel is an easy 10-min walk from the train station. St.Gallen is a beautiful historic town full of architectural gems (take note of the intricate designs of its many oriel windows) & Hotel DOM's central location makes it very convenient to explore the charming Old Town on foot.


The Tourist Office (near the train station) offers an excellent "Historic Walking Tour" where they provide you with a Map & an Audio Guide w/pre-recorded commentary on each of the historical sites found along the proposed route; this self-guided tour will take about 3 hrs to complete, depending on your pace & how long you linger at each spot... Well-worth the time & highly recommended.


We stayed in a budget double room @ Hotel DOM that was of a good size and well appointed with all necessary amenities. The room had comfy beds, clean sheets & towels, bathrobes (quite rare in Swiss hotels), a desk with reading lamp, 2 chairs, a big closet, luggage rack, radio, small TV, wash basin with mirror & hairdryer. The room also had a big balcony with a small table & chairs where you could do a bit of light reading out in the fresh air, though there wasn't much of a view to write home about...

Bathrooms & toilets were located down the hall and were spotlessly clean, the shower had good water pressure too. 
The Hotel also has a cozy Hospitality Lounge (on the 2nd floor i believed) with coffee & tea-making facilities where guests could enjoy complimentary hot drinks.

The breakfast buffet @ Hotel DOM was one of the best we've had during our 5-week stay in various hotels all over Switzerland. There was a generous spread with good variety of bread, pastries, cereals, jams, cheeses, cold cuts, fruits & beverages. The croissants here were delicious, i simply couldn't resist having them even though i'm usually averse to rich buttery stuff.


Hotel DOM is supported by Verein Foerderraum, a Swiss association that trains & provides people with mild disabilities with gainful employment, thus enabling them to lead more independent lives & integrate into mainstream society. The staff here may be slightly 'different' from what you'd expect @ most hotels but the service they provide is no less professional. In fact, the staff who served us (Reception Desk, Breakfast Buffet & Housekeeping) during our stay were all exceptionally polite, competent & helpful ~ they really seemed to take pride in their work. I was most impressed with the level of professionalism & service excellence @ Hotel DOM!!


Btw, Hotel DOM will be undergoing some renovation works from January to May 2010, so the place may not look the same as depicted in these pictures here (taken during our stay in late Sep 2009). Nevertheless, we would definitely stay here again whenever we visit St.Gallen.
