“Very mixed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I was staying here for a business trip lasting 4 nights in December - having also stayed here earlier in the year for a similar length of time. The rooms are quite well appointed though a distinct lack of power sockets - I had to unplug one of the lamps in order to plug in my laptop. The hotels has now changed its policy and wifi is now free. I wish more hotels took note!

The room itself and bathroom were always maintained to a relatively high standard and were nice and clean. The bathroom was well appointed but the shower screen over the bath had not been fitted correctly and so any attempt at a shower lead to the floor being flooded. A colleague in another room was having the same problem.

The reception area is very pleasant and has a nice modern feel to it - the over use of a massive plug in airfreshner initially was pleasant but it irritated the nose after a while!

That is the good points - now for the cons.

The hotel is under going a massive refurbishment at the moment - and the communal areas are covered in dust. The noise of drilling and hammering from fairly early in the morning became very irritating and it was impossible to rest in ones room during the day without being disturbed

Just prior to arriving the hotel had had to close the restaurant/bar due to a water leak and the breakfast room was moved to a clinical conference room on the top floor. In itself not a problem. But the breakfast was quite a sorry affair for the amount they were charging and the bacon was only just cooked and the scrambled eggs were totally cold.

The restaurant did reopen and really there was not a great deal of improvement in the quality of breakfast. (When I was there in the spring -
sparrows had managed to get into the restaurant and were eating the pastries!!!) The coffee in the restaurant was poor - you had to pay extra for a decent one. Again this is a change from the spring where there was a machine one good use. On my last morning - I was leaving relatively early - I came down to breakfast to be told there was no eggs that morning - just under cooked bacon!

The staff in general are helpful but the waiting staff are not of a very high caliber and often over zealous in clearing away. The breakfast is a buffet - if you leave your place for too long you will return to an empty place as they will have cleared it!

The hotel has a pride of place position on the lake front of Neuchatel and is by no means a budget hotel. For the amount of the rooms and the cost of the breakfast I would expect much better quality in respect to the general ambiance and particularly the breakfasts.

If you are considering using this hotel - I would enquire as to whether the refurb has finished, as I wouldnt stay there again until it has.

“Bad Time at the "Beau" Lake”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

It started good, when we arrived late. They upgraded us at the reception. Junior Suite : Great ! But for technical reasons the restaurant was closed. So no problem , lets take the room service. Three different meals (hamburger, tartare, miso soup...) Miso soup was out , if we wanna have salad ? Within the promised 30 minutes they delivered the menu , the dishes wrapped in plastic. The waiter just put the tablet on the table. He was not able to serve it. The salad for 8 Sfr. was uneatable salty. The Tartare was either a very regional speciality, but we never saw a Tartare like this. I tried to eat , my wife didn't.The Beer was good.We had to Tvs , but no signal. They couldn't manage it. At the reception they promised, we don't have to pay for the salad, which they didn't know in the morning... At breakfast (which we didn't have to pay the additional 25 Sfr each , because of the TV ) there was a cold atmosphere like in a bad cantina. The scrambled eggs where cold too, because they forgot to switch the heater... Without the very calm and friendly Receptionists I would have said it was one of the badest hotels I ever was. But they tried their best in a very bad situation. To have these bad circumstances on such a great place on one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, its a problem of the owner or highest management. To pay 430 SFr. for a service like this is ridiculous. The Suite has a wonderful view on the lake. Its based to the harbor. A dream ! But they don't take care for the details.

Mixed feelings about this hotel. Our room was really comfortable, very very roomy and breezy and felt like a ship cabin with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake... and we only had a superior room, not a suite. We could not get tired of the outstanding views : all one could see was blue waters, blue skies, sailboats and snowy mountains across the lake. Breathtaking.

We understand the hotel has undertaken some major refurbishment. Some of the public areas are nicely conceived, in a minimalist style. Nice foyer and lobby. Others are still obviously in the process of being transformed, including a shop and a café.

Staff was very nice but somehow, it fellt like there were very rather few of them. For some reason, we kept searching and waiting whenever we needed to see someone. Same applied in the restaurant in the morning. Breakfast room-doubles up as restaurant-doubles up as sushi bar. It fellt as though they were completely unaware they did have guests that might appear for breakfast in the morning : they were already busy setting the tables for lunch at 9 :30 AM and we fellt a little intrusive.

Because of the views and of the menu that seemed quite promising, we booked a table for dinner. Lets say the cook really tries hard. Tries… His cuisine is really inventive but somehow also a little deceiving and perhaps slightly too sophisticated.

Anyway, we would certainly go back because of the superb central location, views, size of the room and, more prosaically, value for money which we thougth was excellent.

“Excellent après une longue attente”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

Having used the restaurant for a business r.d.v, my initial impression was very poor, over 30 minutes in the bar area before our presence was acknowledged (despite having been seen almost immediatly at 11H10). As the only bar now in the hotel I had hoped for a coffee. Having initially been met with negatives (only 5dl bottles of water, no food in bar area etc) we were then greeted by tha manager and all was arranged and the staff extremely pleasant and sushi excellent. It became quite busy around 12h30 and obviously is well appreciated for full meals.

“Home away from home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

My travels take me to Neuchatel on a monthly basis and this hotel is the most comfortable and hospitable in the area. The staff are wonderful and the proximity to everything in the city is great! The rooms are 80% updated, the bathrooms are a little dated but very comfortable.
I look forward to my next stay at Beaulac.
