“Night noise the only negative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2008

This hotel is in an excellent position in the middle of the beautiful old town of Thun overlooking the town square. The rooms are comfortable though I felt a hotel of this class (4 star) should have soft chairs to watch TV rather than the two hard upright chairs provided.
Breakfast was a very good buffet and the meal in the Swiss restaurant tasty and filling if not inspiring. There are two other restaurants - Chinese and French - which we did not try.
The big disadvantage for us was the excesive noise late into the night made by revellers returning home in the street below. To be fair we were staying at the weekend and at the time Of the Thun Festival, but our experience would make us think very hard before booking again

“Nice town centre hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2008

Stayed two nights whilst touring by car. We were allocated a corner room with views both of the river and the Rathaus Square. There was a fete in the town over the weekend and consequently a lot of noise and jollity which died down about 10pm so did not disturb our sleep. The room was very pleasant, looking recently renovated in a modern style with a good bathroom. The hotel has underground parking for a few cars at a cost of 10 swiss francs per night, with lift access from the corridors.
We dined one night in their Chinese Restaurant and although the food was excellent the place was woefully understaffed with ONE harrassed waiter trying to serve everybody with food and drink. The second night we had dinner in the gourmet restaurant which was much quieter and here again the food was very good. There was an interesting buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. Nice young manager who spoke good English. We were able to explore the interesting old town from the door of the hotel.

“Decent hotel with a few flaws...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2008

My husband and I spent two nights at Hotel Krone in Thun, Switzerland on our way back to Germany from Italy. I was initially impressed by the hotel's charming exterior, right next to the city hall. However, actually getting to the hotel and unloading our bags was a bit of a problem because, at first, we thought the area around the hotel was closed to traffic. The hotel has a few parking spots in back as well as a tiny parking garage. Thankfully, there was space for our small SUV, but it was a tight squeeze getting it in there. We also had to move the car and parking in the public garage the second night because the garage was scheduled to be cleaned early the next morning. Luckily, the public garage is within walking distance.

The room was basically nice and quite spacious. We were pleased with the bed and the comfortable duvets. However, I was a little put off by the empty, obviously used bottle of Thun water in our room. There was a note next to it in German that implied the bottle was supposed to be filled with Thun water, which we could drink and, perhaps, take home with us for the princely sum of 18 Swiss francs.

The bathroom was clean and came equipped with a shower, as well as an obviously used votive candle sitting in a holder behind the toilet. Speaking of the toilet, we had some trouble flushing it a couple of times.

Hotel Krone has wireless Internet access that can be accessed by the hour or day. Four hours cost 19 Swiss francs, while 24 hours cost 30 francs. There's also a television with a generous selection of channels and a minibar.

We sat out on the terrace and tried the hotel's Chinese food the first night. Menus are available in English and German, which is a good thing, because Hotel Krone has several different cuisines available. Our meals were quite good and the service was decent, until we asked for dessert. I asked for creme brulee and was brought what appeared to be melted caramel ice cream with a dollop of whip cream on top and a cookie. When we asked if that was supposed to be creme brulee, the waitress said it was. I don't know if she was lying or had simply never seen creme brulee before, but it sure didn't look like any creme brulee I've ever had. Oh well.

I will comment that the breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of breads, meats, jams, fruits, cereals and juices offered, as well as hard boiled eggs. The coffee was very good and the service at breakfast was excellent. We also have no complaints about the front desk.

This hotel is probably best for train or bus travelers because parking is so limited. Still, it's near the lake and convenient to the downtown area. It's also not as expensive as some of the other hotels we were considering. I'd probably stay there again, but I'd steer clear of the creme brulee.

“One of the Best Hotels of Our Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2007

When we stayed here in May 2006, no one had yet written a review for the Krone and we had heard about more than enough surprises for tourists in Italy and England to be hesitant, but there was no need to worry. This was easily the most pleasant and trouble-free stay of our whole vacation. We found a discount offer through a website devoted to the Bernese Oberland. It was something like "stay 3 days and get the 4th free".

The Hotel Krone is a venerable old inn on the town square (Rathausplatz). It is just 5 minutes walk over two bridges from the Hauptbahnhof and we covered this at a brisk walk with our luggage in tow. The interior is so thoroughly remodelled that no one would ever guess the age of this building. The rooms were very spacious and generous. We did not stay in a Tower room, but neither was it among the standard (perhaps smaller) rooms, but an inbetween size.

Breakfast was obscenely generous and bountiful. We almost had no further need to eat until the next day -- soft-boiled eggs, yoghurts, cheeses, cold sliced meats, fresh shelled nuts, apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, exotic papayas and rambutans and lychees, pitchers of juices, herbal teas and good black coffee.

The desk receptionists do double duty as concierges and tour guides. We spoke to two different young ladies and both were very helpful and gave good advice in regards to the weather and what we should expect high in the mountains and the Jungfrau. We went one day to the Simplon Tunnel and into Italy by Postbus; one day up the Jungfrau; one day into Berne for a city tour and parliament tour plus Lucerne on the way back. All expeditions went smoothly. We went as far west as Lausanne and as far east as Lucerne and as far south as Domodossola in Italy, all on day-trips out of Thun.

We toured Schloss Thun on our last morning before leaving for Vienna. My regret is that we did not have time to spare to see more of Thun itself. We debated taking a lake steamer down to Interlaken. We missed a music festival in the main square because we were determined to get to the Simplon Tunnel (it was the centenary of this engineering marvel). We stayed so much in the centre of the old town that we missed seeing the walls enclosing it! If I ever get to Switzerland again, this is where I shall go to stay!

“The bells!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 April 2007

Great hotel in a really fantastic location in Thun (try the Rathaus cafe and restaurant 2 minutes' walk away). We had a tower room overlooking the central square and fountain and it was well worth the small extra charge. The only problem was the bells from an adjacent building that rang the time on the hour AND chimed every quarter hour throughout the night.
