This place has a lot to recommend it - not least its fabulous location. For the money, I don't think you would find a better place to stay in the city.

The Hostel recently completed a major extension and refurbishment and on the whole I think it's a success, except perhaps with the design of the double rooms. The minimalist approach is fine and I did like our room, but when water splashes out from the shower wetting the entire floor, there's no where to hang clothes or even a glass to drink from, then something isn't quite right.

The lack of free WIFI and the some what canteen standard food still wouldn't stop me thoroughly recommend this place.

The St. Alban Valley was one of the first industry quarters, which got built within the medieval city wall. The dye houses for silk ribbons where the origin of Basel’s chemical industries. There is also a paper and print museum which goes back to the Basel council, which took place from 1445 until 1449. It was the start of the print industry.
St. Alban Youth Hostel got installed in one of the old factory buildings. They offer rooms with one, two, three, four, five and six beds with washbasins and some of them with their own shower/bathroom others with a shower and bathrooms on the floor.
The rooms are basic but extremely clean. We met many families and not only young people who were visiting the area. The reception staff we met was very helpful. When you check in you get a ticket for free public transport within Basel (tramways and busses). There are also maps for public transport and roads available which you can get for free. A free breakfast is included in the room prices. There is also a bike cellar available.
If you like, you can get lunch and dinner or a lunch packet at the hostel for a cheap price.
Youth Hostel St. Alban was the best hostel we ever visited.

Lovely youth hostel, pretty average but very clean and mostly modern with pool tables and ping pong and internet connection. The location is impeccable with a parc and serene little church right beside it, and the Rhin River only a 2 minute walk away. The nearest tram stop is right down the street through the park, and the Ashenplatz and Basel Bad train station is only a 10 minute walk away. Nice place!

Wonderful hostel in a great location (close to the river, 15 minute walk from the train station, and 10 minutes to downtown) in probably the most underrated city in Switzerland. Basel is beautiful. The hostel is extremely clean, safe, and attracts an interesting crowd. The only downside is that the closest coin laundry is on the other side of the city...2 hours walking.
