This is a perfect place for families or groups seeking to soak up the tranquility of Umbria with breathtaking views of the Tuscan hills. We were charmed by Casa San Martino and this region nine years ago and were exultant to find our memories exact. This is not an upscale retreat - it has the ambiance of visiting a favorite aunt. The beds are comfortable, the house immaculately clean and the kitchen well-stocked. This is a place to prepare some fabulous meals or relax on the terrace with a pan of a neighbor's canelloni or porchetta (roasted pork - sigh) from the local butcher.
Lois is well known in the community and knows the community, and has great information about the region. (Her staff is German - what more could you ask for than German exactitude with Italian hospitality?) She is happy to point you in the right direction for your interests. Hiking, shopping, sightseeing, winetasting, olive oil tasting, local groceries, markets & restaurants. Another day trip to Deruta, Cortona, Assissi or hang by the pool with a bottle of local wine? (I can only imagine snuggling next to the giant hearth in the winter!) Relaxing here is a soothing respite from the hustle of Florence and Rome (each about 2 hours by train).
This trip was with our two children and my in-laws . We are trying to plan our next trip here with another family or perhaps just couples for a cooking class?
