“San Gimignano - Staying on a farm in Tuscany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2009

We recently booked accomodation through labellatoscana.net as it had been recommended by a friend who travelled extensively around Italy. We both really wanted to go to Tuscany in Italy and she recommended San Gimignano for its beauty and tranquility.

It exceeded our expectations, the rolling countryside with its straight rows of cyprus trees, vineyards and olive groves as well as the abundance of ancient architecture.

The biggest surprise was our accomodation on a working farm. It was stunning. The outside space was immense and beautiful. We picked grapes at our breakfast table whilst taking in the views across the valley. We had our own private pool in the olive grove as well as poolside furniture, another wonderful place to sit enjoying the sunshine with a glass of the most amazing red wine produced on the farm. What a way to spend an afternoon with a good book and moments to cool off in the pool..
Inside the accomodation was basic but everything you needed and enough space for 2 and immaculately clean.

With very little Italian at our disposable, we managed through sign language and lots of giggles to communicate with the most adorable couple who owned the farm. We bought their wine and eggs everyday, amazing. They allowed us the freedom to wonder around the farm. The animal enclosure was fascinating but not for the feint hearted as these cute little animals are bred for the table. I have never seen such fat tame pigeons before. I even got to hold chicks just a few hours old.

San Gimignano is a 'must do trip '- aka 'the city of towers' with only 15 standing today. The shops are a bit touristy and pricey but the coffee shops and restaurants were amazing.quality. If you do stay in the location you must also visit Volterre, Sienna and Florence, all within easy reach if you have a car and there is a great bus service available to the train stations. Also make sure you visit the surrounding small villages too.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did - the accomodation was called La Pergola by the way
