The San Luca Palace Hotel was a great place to start our tour of Tuscany. The hotel is very pretty, with good customer service and an excellent breakfast, in a quiet setting. Our room number 36 was very large and quiet. We looked at the floor plans for our floor and noticed that some rooms are much smaller; if you want a large room, you should contact the hotel to request one. We had a little bit of trouble finding the hotel. I believe it was right inside the Vittorio Emmanuel gate, but you should contact the hotel to make sure. There is a very small parking lot(10 euros per night) with a small entrance portal about 100 meters inside the gate; you need to leave your car keys since they need to rearrange the cars when the guests arrive and leave. Walking along the walls, with the large and leafy trees, was a nice treat. The greatest treat, though, was seeing a concert at the Puccini Festival in a church with wonderful acoustics. I think the concerts are daily, and they last an hour. We're not even opera fans, and we just loved it. It may have even been the highlight of our whole trip. The soprano, Ilaria Lanzino, had the most amazing and powerful voice. She and her talented tenor partner sang songs by Puccini and Motzart. After the show, we had a wonderful dinner with great customer service, pretty music, and pretty decor in the Puccini Ristorante. It was nice that the hotel provided the wonderful International Herald Tribune to catch up on news. We really liked walking around the narrow Lucca streets. It seemed more local and less touristy than other stops in San Gimignano, Pisa, Florence, and Siena. All of those places were really nice, too, but Lucca had a quieter charm that we appreciated. We drove to Pisa from the hotel. It's a little hard to figure out the correct way to go. If you try this, you may want to know that the Fi-Pi-Li signs stand for the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno road, something that wasn't on our road maps. You could ask the hotel staff how to best get on the fast freeway to Pisa.
