“Beautiful hotel; friendly staff”

This is a lovely, small hotel within the walled city of Lucca, in North Tuscany. The staff is kind and rooms are super clean with nice amenities. The maid even folded my nightie every evening and slipped it under my pillow. Since I was traveling light, I really appreciated the slippers and robe, too.

“pure luxury”

This hotel was pure luxury. The staff were excellent, the breakfasts (and the gnetleman who looked after us in the mornings) excellent. Position fantastic, just inside the walls, but very quiet. Super large rooms with luxurious furnishings. The young man in the evenings tending the bar was most helpful, the night manager even serenaded us at the bar, the day manager sets the tone for the whole hotel. Just a lovely experience.

Room Tip: room overlooking the street gives you the opportunity to see the passing parade of people. No worri...

“A quiet, beautiful hotel in a charming town”

The San Luca Palace Hotel was a great place to start our tour of Tuscany. The hotel is very pretty, with good customer service and an excellent breakfast, in a quiet setting. Our room number 36 was very large and quiet. We looked at the floor plans for our floor and noticed that some rooms are much smaller; if you want a large room, you should contact the hotel to request one. We had a little bit of trouble finding the hotel. I believe it was right inside the Vittorio Emmanuel gate, but you should contact the hotel to make sure. There is a very small parking lot(10 euros per night) with a small entrance portal about 100 meters inside the gate; you need to leave your car keys since they need to rearrange the cars when the guests arrive and leave. Walking along the walls, with the large and leafy trees, was a nice treat. The greatest treat, though, was seeing a concert at the Puccini Festival in a church with wonderful acoustics. I think the concerts are daily, and they last an hour. We're not even opera fans, and we just loved it. It may have even been the highlight of our whole trip. The soprano, Ilaria Lanzino, had the most amazing and powerful voice. She and her talented tenor partner sang songs by Puccini and Motzart. After the show, we had a wonderful dinner with great customer service, pretty music, and pretty decor in the Puccini Ristorante. It was nice that the hotel provided the wonderful International Herald Tribune to catch up on news. We really liked walking around the narrow Lucca streets. It seemed more local and less touristy than other stops in San Gimignano, Pisa, Florence, and Siena. All of those places were really nice, too, but Lucca had a quieter charm that we appreciated. We drove to Pisa from the hotel. It's a little hard to figure out the correct way to go. If you try this, you may want to know that the Fi-Pi-Li signs stand for the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno road, something that wasn't on our road maps. You could ask the hotel staff how to best get on the fast freeway to Pisa.

“Well-located, and a great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

My husband and I stayed one night at the San Luca Palace, and overall considered it a great experience.

One of the keys with hotels in Italy is location--especially if you're driving. The San Luca Palace has this in spades--it's within the walls, but easily accessible from the road. By far the easiest finding-and-parking experience we had in 10 days in Tuscany. It's a short walk to the center of everything, and there's an entrance to the wall (for biking, walking, picnicking, etc) 50 feet away. It doesn't get better than that!

Our room was very large, and the decor was fine, if somewhat odd. Tasteful, but with corners cut, almost as if the contracter had done the decorating rather than a decorator. Huge bathroom though, which was much appreciated after several nights in smaller room-bathroom situations.

The staff at the front desk was beyond helpful--from directing us to the free bikes for guests (which was great), to pouring us an after-dinner Limoncello when the bartender wasn't nearby. Overall, the service here was noticeably good, which goes a long way. We felt very well taken care of in our time here!

We did have some connection issues with the wireless internet--we couldn't get an IP address assigned--which was frustrating, but if that's the only issue, it's a fairly small one.

We adored our trip to Lucca, and will definitely stay here again when we're back!
