My husband and I stayed at the Casa del Lago for 4 nights, while we celebrated our tenth anniversay in Florence. We thought this place was amazing for the following reasons:
(1) We had booked through Lastminute and had only paid 30 Euros each per night AND this included breakfast, contrary to the website's warnings that "unless stated, breakfast is not included"
(2) The hotel is located on the 4th floor of an old palace and is in the same building as the Austrian Consulate. In fact, as you walk up the Arno from Puente Vecchio, you pass the British consulate, then a few minutes later the American consulate, then a few minutes later this building. We felt VERY secure as there were police and barriers blocking approach to the American Consulate and being just a few minutes down the road (walking) from there it was on a VERY quiet street.
(3) We were given our dream - A ROOM WITH A VIEW!! (we had written ahead and explained that we were celebrating our anniversary...) To have a room with any kind of view in Florence you have to be at least on the third or 4th floor of your hotel to see over roof tops. We had that advantage(which is guaranteed at this place because all the rooms are on the fourth floor) AND we were facing the Arno! We woke up every morning to gorgeous views of the river, the bridges and the surrounding Tuscan hills... and After walking down to the Degli Orafi Hotel (where apparantly the movie Room with a View was filmed) and going up to their roof terrace to see the view and looking at their 400 Euro a night "room with a view" we felt that the view from our place just as wonderful and engaging, as we could see more country-side AND the river, but further down the Arno closer to Puente Vecchio it is hard to get such a view from a hotel, and you will pay much more without knowing if you will have view!
(3) The place was very clean and the staff (it is run by the family that owns it) were VERY helpful, providing maps and recommending restaurants!
(4) Antonio made wonderful cappaccinos for us every morning and breakfast included fresh bread and a selection of yogurts, spreads, jams, nutella, etc.
(5) The location was very good for seeing all the sights of Florence on foot, and very close to the train station. The only thing we missed was a full bath to soak in at the end of a day of shopping and sight-seeing..
We whole-heartedly recommend this hotel, mainly for the almost guaranteed good views from the fourth floor, its locations and the price.
