“Lemons to Lemoncello!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

This review is one of turning lemons to lemoncello! Before leaving for Italy, we made a reservation at the Hotel Bigallo in Florence, Italy. We had stayed there on several occasions and always in the same room with a view of the Duomo and belltower. Upon arriving, we were stunned to see that the entire front of the hotel was covered in scaffolding. I commented on the scaffolding to the desk clerk as we checked in and she indicated that it would not matter and we would still be able to see the Duomo. When we opened the window of the room, we were stunned to be face to face with a workman on the scaffolding chiseling stucco. The room was filled with the smell and grit of plaster dust from the restoration and the sound of the chisel and flying plaster. Returning to the desk, we said that we could not possibly stay in the room. She was very nice and immediately made some phone calls and in a very short time, a gentleman appeared to escort us to their other properties...the Hotel De Lanzi and La Repubblica Apartments. They gave us a choice of a room at the Hotel De Lanzi or an apartment overlooking Piazza Republica. We chose the apartment. It was a large room with cooking facilitites, which we did not use and a nicely tiled bath. We took breakfast each morning in the Hotel DeLanzi dining room. After our initial shock at the Bigallo scaffolding, we were more than pleased with the way the staff addressed the situation and our concerns. They could not have been more accommodating and we will return again and again.

“Great Location but noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

I booked this hotel despite the review on trip advisor because the location was so good and the reviews on Bookings.com all seemed fine. We were expecting a very basic room but were prepared for this again because it is right in the centre. Instead were pleasantly surprised at the good quality of the finish in the bedroom and particularly the bathroom. The best bit was we opened our window and the bell tower and Duomo were right in front of us. We could just watch all the tours and the excitement go by our window. The other side of this is that we were woken up each morning by the bells at 6:45 and 7:45 despite the external shutters, the window and the internal shutters being closed. If you are prepared to put up with this then the location and the quality of the room are great for the price. Breakfast is fine. Some of the people looking after reception were hard to talk to they were so unfriendly. Others were fine.

“LOVED IT!! Homey and cozy...unbeatable location!"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

I loved everything about this hotel. I felt like at home there, staff was very nice, hotel was clean, good intenet, amazing location. Duomo was right in front of my window...amazing... But if you want to sleep well get the room on the other side (because of the noise and bells). Nevertheless.... I could tolerate early waking up for the amazing view. Great little hotel!!!

“Avg cost-benefit, great location, terrible service. Dont go if you want anything but cost and location.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

Reception very unhelpful, one night we waited 20 min to get our key (staff disappeared), parking very costly and unsafe due to city restrictions. Room just avg, great location right in front of duomo.

“Booked at Bigallo for location, and they switched us to another hotel.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

After a tonne of time spent researching an affordable hotel in Florence in the best possible location to be able to view the Big Easter Sunday celebration at the Duomo (Scoppio del Carro), we found the Hotel Bigallo. We booked a room for 2 people, and the reservation was confirmed via email. Approx. 1 week before we left for Italy, I emailed confirmation of our reservation, and also requested a room with a view once again, and was surprised to get an email back, saying that the hotel bigallo was fully booked, and they had moved our reservation to their sister hotel, Hotel De Lanzi. They said that it was around the corner from the bigallo, and they could guarantee us a room with a view of the bell tower.
After all the time we spent looking for the right hotel, then with only 1 week to find another place we felt like we had no other choice but accept the move reluctantly.
The biggest disappointment was that they took it upon themselves to not only take our reservation in advance, knowing that their hotel was full, but they did not give us enough time to find another hotel in our price range during Easter weekend.
This was very back customer service, in my opinion, and quite cheesy if you ask me.
I do not recommend reserving at Hotel Bigallo if you have your heart set on staying there.
