I will start off by saying I am not paid to write this, I PAID to write this (e.g. I actually stayed at the hotel in Sept 2011 and I'm just a bit behind on my review).
First, the good:
The location was ideal for anyone coming in to or leaving Florence by train -- it is literally across the street, so there is no need to pay for any type of transportation. Just note that when you exit the train station, coming off the platform turn right or you will be doing some extra walking.
We paid for the standard, and the rooms were quite spacious, with an in-room safe, double-bed (well two twins but pretty comfortable regardless), a big bathroom, and space to move around. Pretty decent value all told with respect to the room.
Second, the So-So:
The front desk staff initially seemed pretty curt, may have been a language thing because sadly I don't speak Italian but the guy seemed a bit short, and we were left to navigate the hotel and find our own room despite the crazy numbering scheme (e.g. there are rooms starting with 1, 2, 3, & 4 on all floors -- huh!?). I say so-so, because the next time we went to the desk, the same guy was working and he helped us find our way to the football stadium by train, gave us advice on how to get there, and turned out to be pretty helpful -- we would have been lost without him. So I want to say it was good, but that first experience was pretty lasting.
The other so-so was the breakfast. I love that it was included, and their pastries were pretty good, but everything else was meh, and we were especially disappointed by the coffee -- I mean it comes from a machine, so it seemed a little un-Italian to us. By day 3, we started skipping breakfast altogether and grabbed coffee at the Mcdonalds :)
Lastly, the Bad:
Three things stuck out to me as a extra disappointing:
1 - the elevators were a waste of time -- one person limit in each, was easier to take the stairs.
2 - the cleaning of the floors all the time, seemed to be a bit overkill and the smell it left gave us headaches.
3 - the shower that had no shower curtain, and the head wouldnt stay put -- i am from Canada so maybe I am slow in the way of the world, but if there is not shower curtain how do you stop the water from flying all over the room? We had to keep our stuff in the main room for fear it would get soaked, and every time one of us showered we almost killed ourselves walking on their tile floors! Pretty inconvenient and frustrating, despite how trivial it sounds...
All in all, if you are looking for VALUE, this place is the ticket -- if you want something that will knock your Florentine socks off, I recommend looking elsewhere.
