“What a Cesspool”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2009

This hotel is located in a less than desirable part of town. My initial impression was that it was in a ghetto. In the daylight my impression was mitigated somewhat, during the day there were mostly tourists about. However the graffiti, trash strewn streets and strange characters hanging around after dark doesn't make for a pleasant setting.

My room was Awful. #211 avoid it at any cost. Small, threadbare, with a shower curtain only, no stall. Taking a shower meant the entire bathroom got wet. But that wasn't the half of it. The Stench was almost unbearable. After a shower for at least 4 hours it smelled as if the sewer system was backing up into the room.

Of course the hotel was full for there wasn't a room available for me to move to, and they were surly about my complaints!

Avoid this hotel!!!

“Great location”

The hotel is very close to the train station and within a short walking distance of all the main sights. The staff was very helpful - they arranged our museum reservations for us, and even changed them several times at our request. They provided us with a map and explained where most of the sights were. The room was clean and spacious, although the furniture was old. The bathroom was spotless, no funny smells or anything. The breakfast was okay (pastries, some cold cuts and cereal), but the coffee from the machine was terrible. All in all, good value for the money we paid. We would stay there again.

“great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2009

single traveller gets put in a big cupboard- no shock there! It all felt a bit tired and drab, despite the charming and helpful staff. Breakfast- don't bother, coffee from a self service machine- goout and have a real Italian espresso.

“I would give it negative stars, but that's not an option on here.....”

Coming from someone who has traveled often, this has got to be the worst stay I've ever had, and this includes hostels and overnights on a rickety budget train in China.

The hotel was ancient, and smelled like mold. The bathrooms smelled like a sewer. Worst of all, the air conditioning did NOT work, which is not good for the hot muggy summer weather. It was actually cooler outside, believe it or not. We would call the front desk for assistance, but this hotel doesn't even provide phones.

To get the front desk, you have to walk downstairs to get assistance, but they only have one staff member working, and sometimes they aren't even there, so you have to wait forever just to get helped.

Basically you will be better off in the streets, where it is cooler and doesn't smell like sewage.

I guess you can argue that sleeping in the streets wouldn't be safe for your valuables, but guess what, Byron Hotel doesn't have safety deposit boxes either.

I would never come here unless you want to ruin your Florence experience.

“Old but well located - only worth it at heavily discounted rate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2009

I was in a nearby 4* hotel, much too expensive, and decided to prolong my stay in Florence. So I looked around and got a cheap rate here by walking in and asking (60 € / night for a double-single use, breakfast included). Still, this is not what you would expect from a 3* hotel. As other travellers have stated, this is an old place, not renovated in a looong time; everything is old and dingy; breakfast is far from memorable and my TV did not have a remote. But the crucial things were OK: clean sheets and towels, and a decent bathroom. The location was ideal for my needs (1 minute walk from train station and bus to Pisa airport, 10 minutes walk from all the sightseeing in Florence). I asked for a room at the back: no views but quiet. At the rate I got, it was a decent deal but nothing to write home about. I would not recommend this hotel because I suppose some research will get you a better place for the same money or not much more. If you need to be close to the train station, look in via Faenza (on the other side of the station); the location is equivalent and there seem to be good cheap hotels there.
