“Security is a serious problem here. And the breakfast is not fresh.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2010

The electronic safe in our hotel room had been unlocked while were out for the day (??) and this was the main reason we checked out of this hotel early and went to stay at another hotel. Also the breakfast was pretty poor. There was nobody in the breakfast room to help serve patrons and an unusual array of stuff laid out on a buffet table which I can only presume was a lazy attempt at putting together a continental breakfast. I've never seen the Italian equivalent of Dairylea in little portions served up as a breakfast item before and the brew which I had to make myself from a flask of lukewarm water was just terrible! Also there was a hole in the tiles in our shower where I'm guessing a light fitting had once been meaning that when you pulled the shower curtain across you were effectively showering in the dark. A shame really because with a bit more effort this could be a nice enough hotel. My advice -- if you stay in any hotel take a really decent lock for your case and keep anything personal in there (not a lock like the ones that you get free sometimes with a suitcase as these are usually rubbish)

“Beautiful hotel in a gorgeous quiet area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

We stayed at the Classic Hotel for two nights and we were thrilled with our room. It had 2 levels with a mezzanine sitting room, painted ceiling, and furnished with lovely antiques. The windows looked out into the quaint garden. Overall we were very comfortable (I think we might have gotten the best room because we were there on our honeymoon).

The location of the hotel was great and it was an easy 15 or so minute walk to the historic centre of florence and the major train station. Being a little out of the centre was good because we saw a little more than the typical tourist who will visit the major sites and that's it. There are some small supermarkets around within a 5 minute which is handy also, and you're less than 5 minutes to the beautiful boboli gardens.

The breakfast left a little to be desired but it was adequate. The staff were very friendly too. We would stay here again.

“What a GREAT hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2008

I loved this hotel. The location is great, just outside the Porta Romano, one of the gates to the old city wall. It is a short walk to the bus, and a 15 minute walk to the Ponte Vecchio, all a flat, easy walk.
It was quiet and romantic, and very reasonably priced. The night-shift woman at the desk was so nice and helpful. I was traveling alone, and would definitely recommend this place. I agree with the previous comment about breakfast. Especially if you have to pay, skip the breakfast.

“Super location, lovely staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2008

Spent a week here in early April. The hotel had a real comfy feel to it, and our room by Italian standards was gigantic! Staff couldn't have been more helpful, where to eat, where to visit and so on, also booking some of our visits for us so we didn't have to join the queues. We followed all their suggestions and were delighted. The best part though was the location on a lovely tree-lined avenue; peace and quiet and still only 10 minutes stroll from the Pitti Palace and the Ponte Vecchio. Breakfast hasn't really improved but this is a minor quibble. I'd go back in a flash. (Just to put this in context, I'm middle-aged, female and not into late-night partying!)

  • Liked — spacious and with a bit of personality
  • Disliked — getting a little bit run down.

“Theft and appalling treatment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2006

we stayed at the classic hotel for 3 nights in july. on the second morning i returned to my room at 11.30am and noticed that the door was wide open. this was strange as i had just picked up the key from reception. the maid came from around the corner, flustered, and told me i needed to lock my room. once inside i discovered that the safe was open. i checked my jewlery box and everything seemed to me there. that night i looked through my suitcase for a favorite silk skirt and it was missing. i thought i may have left it at our villa we had previsouly rented. however, on checking out the next morning i discovered that 4 items of clothing were missing including a top that i had worn to the hotel. at that point i knew they had been stolen. i told the gentleman on the front desk who said it was 'impossible' and that if it was the case i needed to get a police report. as a courtesy he also deducted one night stay from my bill. the items stolen were worth about $800. one nights stay was $120!

i spent an entire day and about 50 euros in taxis getting the report. i did not pay my bill and the hotel agreed to file a claim with their insurance company to cover the room and maybe my clothes. they could offer no idea if or when i would see any compensation. i know the maid took my things and told the receptionist. i even offered a 150 euro reward if they were 'found'.

i have had little or no communication from the hotel. the one email i finally received was in very formal and legal italian telling me that the insurance co had a 150 euro deductible and that they did not make credits to foroeign credit cards. i was also expetcing mail at the hotel and was emailing to see if it had been received. they finally responded and told me it had been returned to sender. this was actually a replacement credit card that i needed for my trip.

i asked to see the owner and was told that she was not in florence and so unavalable unless i was paying my total bill then she would see me. i was thoroughly shocked at how badly i was treated. as far as i know the maid was never questioned. i asked for her details to offer her the chance to send the clothes to me in return for the reward and the hotel refused to give me her info.

this experience ruined my trip in florence and i would never recommend that anyone stay there.
