“A tuscan dream come true...”

If you ever dreamed of experiencing Tuscany, than look no further than Relais Borgo San Pietro. This was a remarkably restored farmhouse with amazing views, privacy, and just a short 8 minute car ride up the hill to the town centre of Cortona. The rooms were romantic; the food in the restaurant was amazing. They served the best minestrone soup we’ve ever tried. Lounging in the pool with views of the hill town was a great escape from the bustling cities.

A word on Cortona: I heard about this town and planned to visit it because of Frances Mayes book and movie Under the Tuscan Sun. I cannot have been more grateful to her for introducing me to this town. This quaint and charming hilltop town turned out to be my favorite in my entire 3 week journey through Italy, which spanned from Venice all the way to the Amalfi coast. I could not have asked for a better experience. Not only was the town spectacular, from their hill views overlooking Tuscany, to the town square, but the people of the town were most welcoming. They were happy to talk with us and show us around. There was a beautiful art gallery; there was a store which housed centuries-old Etruscan well, which the store owner was so kind to tell us about and show us.

The food was amazing – you cannot eat badly in Cortona. We found a store which had home-made cookies that we brought home and everyone loved. We had dinner twice at a restaurant called FuFluns, which was amazing. You must have the Salsicce!

Overall, visiting Cortona was the highlight of my trip. I was even fortunate to meet in person the great Frances Mayes and see the beautiful home Bramasole. Her journey in the book has been a great inspiration for me. Between the town centre of Cortona, which was an amazing place to get away from tourist-havens and fall into the calm of life in Tuscany and go for an evening stroll as the locals do and sit in the piazza and watch life in Tuscany unfold in front of you; to the charming restored farmhouse that made you feel like it was your own private place in Tuscany, I could not have asked for more.

Relais Borgo San Pietro, get my room ready. I’m coming back next year!

“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at the Relais. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and spacious and we had a wonderful view of Cortona from our window. We loved the breakfast every morning in the garden and listening to the church bells in the distance. We enjoyed the pool and the free wi-fi and it was convenient to day trips all over Tuscany. Luciane, Sarah and Elenora made us feel right at home.

“very italian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Actually we liked the rather 'off' location to Cortona, feeling part of the typical italian landscape and had nice views around. Cortona was only a 5 mts drive uphill and we were glad we didn't book a hotel in the inevitably touristic centre but a few miles outside.
The room and furniture had a very old italian ' borgo' atmosphere, including an old dusty smell, which, once noticed, we were used to very quickly. The bathroom was large and well supplied. The swimming pool is very nice situated in the surrounding fields. The service was accurate, missed a bit a family feeling though (after a very warm welcome we saw 5 different people at the reception in 1,5 day). Breakfast was nice on a terrace outside. Perfect place for exploring the south of tuscany.

Room Tip: you can choose rooms in surrounding 'private' buildings.

“Nice hotel in a isolated location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

The hotel itself was fine, our only complaint there was that the bed was too hard. The pool area was great, and the pool larger than expected. Other than the pool, there was nothing special about the hotel. What we didn't like was the location. We thought it was 2 km outside Cortona, and that we would be able to walk to town for dinner. It is 3-4 km from Cortona, and Cortona is at the top of a very, very steep hill. So it would have taken a long time to walk. The reception expected the taxi to cost 18 EUR each way, so we ended up driving for dinner, which meant no wine for the driver. No restaurant at the hotel either, and nothing closer than Cortona. So we wouldn't recommend this place unless you don't drink - I'm sure it is possible to find similar places it a better location.

“a beautiful place”

I was there in august with my family and friends. Friendly welcome, fine location, comfortable and clean rooms, lovely pool, although if the frequent presence of bees in the water could make it sometime dangerous, especially for allergic subjects. Attention to agree in advance the price of cleaning if you choose the apartment accommodation . We paid 30 euros for three days for the final clean and this price was not envisaged at the time of booking.
