“Great Ambience and Owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

We spent two nights at the Il Falconiere and enjoyed ourselves a great deal. The restaurant is great although expensive. We took a tour of the winery with Ricardo and were completely entertained! He is fabulous, funny and really hospitable. His wine is some of the best in Italy and we shipped several cases home. The pools were very cold in September not sure if they heated them or not. The rooms are very "traditional" in decor.

“Lovely location. You need a car though.”

We stayed a very lovely five nights at the Il Falconiere. I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews here but the hotel was absolutely lovely. The rooms was large and very clean. The only negative points were that the bed was two singles together to make a king which meant there was a seam in the middle which was a bit disappointing. Also the shower was small and rather like you'd have in a home rather than a 4 star hotel. However the location was fantastic, so beautiful and remote. The staff were lovely and friendly. The rooms were clean and tidy, we loved the fruit they brought to the room. The breakfasts in the morning were fantastic eating outside with the wonderful view. The cappuchinos in the morning were gorgeous, we had a couple every morning. We loved the own brand products in the bathroom. We never ate at the hotel as the prices were huge and we totally fell in love with Cortona and ate there every night. I'll do some reviews of restaurants in Cortona but our favourite restaurants were Il grotto, theatrio and dardano. The spa centre was lovely we just used the pool and the steam room and found it very relaxing. Enjoy your stay at Il Falconiere. There was a little wedding there when we were there and it looked beautiful.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 36 which was very pretty.

“Very disappointed with the hotel, particularly for the very high price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

We traveled in Italy for nearly 3 weeks and this, the most expensive of the hotels we stayed at (more than double the price of the next most expensive hotel) was by far the worst and extremely disappointing.

The location, buildings and grounds are absolutely beautiful. Wonderful views. That is about the only positive thing I can say about the hotel. The restaurant was wonderful and definitely a separate experience.

Our arrival was great and we enjoyed our afternoon at the pool and the dinner the first night. However, after that the experience the rest of our 2 nights there was terrible.

Breakfast the first morning was slow and with only two waitresses available to do ALL the work of keeping things going for a breakfast for a full hotel there was clearly not enough staff.

When we arrived back at the hotel after a full day of activities we discovered that our "AC" was not working. (We had already concluded that it was not real AC but a swamp cooler.) We were hot and miserable all night. We opened the windows at one point but this just resulted in bug bites as the windows had no screens.

Breakfast the 2nd morning was a complete disaster. We were unable to find a table in the shade and so we sat at the little tiny bar thinking that they would clear an empty one for us. (There was one about 3 feet away from where we were sitting.) Never happened and it took over 30 minutes to get something to drink (water!) and that was really only after my husband waived over the waitress. It was awful.

We were able to checkout about an hour late on the day we left, but the staff was pretty much at a loss as for what we could do or even where we could sit in the hour between when we checked out and when the driver picked us up to take us to the train station. They also never asked about the stay and seemed indifferent to ensuring we had been pleased or even ok with our stay. It was basically, "here's your bill - how do you want to pay?"

Overall, the first staff member at Reception was very helpful, but the rest of the staff at the Reception desk was not helpful. I expect a certain level of service when you're paying ~300 Euro a night for a hotel with 4 stars. It was not to be found here at all. Very frustrating and disappointing.

I would not recommend staying here - definitely not even close to being worth the high cost. If you do stay, I would recommend renting a car since the location is not near enough the town of Cortona to walk and it is about a 15 Euro taxi and the rides can add up quickly.

“Outstanding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

When somebody imagines Tuscany you think about romantic scenery, historical sites, flowers, natural beauty, and so on.
Il Falconiere is an amazing property with all of these ingredients for an unforgettable stay.
Beautiful and spacious rooms , unforgettable views from Tuscany, excellent breakfast and one of the best and most beautiful restaurants in Italy (one Michelin star!) and really good service.
If you are looking for a very special place in Tuscany do not hesitate to stay here!
And don´t forget to drink the wine and the olive oil produced in here – Delicious!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with Cortona hill view - you will never forget it!

“Beautiful surroundings, bad experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

We stayed there with our 3 kids for 3 nights. The room we got did not have a properly working AC and they kept on trying to convince us that it was working properly. The room was humid and hot, full of crawling insects (killed 2 scorpions and several spiders) and mosquitoes. We also were shocked when our 3 kids had food poisoning during the 3rd night. Impossible to be sure that it was the room service food they ate but this evening, my wife and I went out for dinner and we were perfectly fine. In a nutshell, beautiful views, a lot of potential, but in many respects disappointing and does not meet the standards of a place like this
