If you’re travelling by car and you want the option of staying outside Syracuse then Principe di Fitalia could be your answer. Mind you, it’s hard to find so you’ll need to feed the address into your Tom-Tom or Garmin device. However, the fact it’s hard to find is really half the charm because it means you’re in the countryside some 3 miles away from the centre of Syracuse. That distance immediately solves any problems in overnight car parking in downtown Syracuse plus you get a view of fields and trees rather than just a view of the surrounding buildings which you’d tend to get from a hotel in the claustrophobic centre of town. Plus out here at Principe you have the benefit of a pool and garden and you don’t get to pay inflated tourist city centre prices.
Rooms start at 70 Euros per night (low season rate) but, thinking such budget prices could translate into rather plain simple rooms, I boldly decided to book a “superior room with balcony” at 140 Euros. Good move because, given the hotel happened to be quiet, we got upgraded to room 23. Mmm – good upgrade because room 23 was the honeymoon suite. Not only did it have a large balcony but there was a stairway leading up to the roof and another balcony – this one totally private.
Now this is no cutting edge ultra modern boutique hotel with the latest fashions in furnishings – in fact the furnishing were modest and rather old but nevertheless comfortable. Principe just had a nice friendly “feel” to it rather like an old pair of your favourite shoes. We were looked after superbly by our hosts and Lavinia in particular went out of her way to help.
We ate dinner on site in a pleasant dining room overlooking the gardens – but being out of season the menu was naturally limited although it was all freshly sourced and cost about 90 Euros for 2 with wine.
After also staying in central Syracuse, as well as Principe, next time I would certainly choose this out of town option. However, you definitely need a car and the hotel is tricky to find. While our room was clearly the best in the hotel I suspect some of the more ordinary rooms could be just that - rather ordinary. However, I found the location attractive and the hotel restful. Finally, car parking was not an issue and there was free wifi although reception was limited to certain parts of the hotel.
