“Great place, helpful friendly staff, and good location!”

This quiet little bed and breakfast in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Venice was exactly what we were looking for. The hotel staff were very friendly and eager to make our stay wonderful. They had excellent recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants (including the best meal we had on our whole trip through Italy -- Osteria L'Orto Dei Mori in Cannereggio). The breakfast every morning was a good spread of pastries, meats, cheeses, and pretty good coffee and cappuccino. I must say though, the location was very good. Some guide books recommend staying close to Piazza San Marco, but in my opinion that area was a little on the touristy side, whereas Santa Croce and Cannereggio were more serene, yet still lively with locals, and still tons of great restaurants, cafes, and bars.

“Lovely hotel but travel light.”

Looking at the map I figured that we could walk, with our cases, from the bus station to the hotel quite easily. I was dead wrong. It was a torturous walk over the steps of numerous bridges in 36 degree heat but that's Venice in July. We were told that we should have taken the vaporetto from the bus station but the nearest stop was on the other side of the canal with no traghettos to be seen. The vaporetto stops on our side were a couple of hundred yards away in each direction. I later enquired about water taxis but was told that those guys charge 50 Euros before they put the meter on. So it has to be said that this isn't an easy hotel to get to.

We had to carry our bags up a flight of stairs to reception and another flight to our floor. After we got our breath back and cooled down we realised that we were in a very nice hotel. The room was very nice and the breakfast was fine. The jazz music they piped into the breakfast room was so bad that my wife and I couldn't stop laughing during breakfast and afterwards so thanks for that.

Over three days there were three different ladies at reception all speaking perfect English and very helpful. We asked for restaurant recommendations. The lady recommended two, one of which we liked and the other we didn't but that's just our opinion.

Five minutes away from the hotel are some shops and an open space with a church and restaurants. I must mention on of these, Al Bagolo at the far end. The first day we had drinks, the second we had lunch and the third we had dinner which beat the recommended restaurant that we did like hands down. I'd had seafood spaghetti Bolognese on the first night which was very nice but the same thing at Al Bagolo had tons more seafood, was tastier and cheaper.

I would stay at this hotel again but only if I didn't have luggage.

“Gorgeous place in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

This hotel is lovely and in a great quiet location. We got a special room rate on booking.com for the junior suite and we were delighted with our room. It was big and comfortable with a lovely terrace. Would definitely recommend staying here.

“VENICE IS MORE THAN PIAZZA SAN MARCO”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

My last trip to Venice lasted one week and I divided my bookings into three different places in order to have a richer experience of the different areas -or sestieri- of the city.

Having spent three nights in Ca' San Giorgio was like opening a big door to a different Venice and I am very pleased with the experience. This B&B by the Grand Canal is a very well kept secret. The service is excellent and the place very comfortable.

Located in the area or sestiere Santa Croce. Right between two vaporetto stops: Riva di Biasio and San Stae. The absence of crowds in Santa Croce is a relief from areas like San Marco or Rialto, lousy with tourists. It is also very convenient for visiting places like I Frari, San Rocco, Ca 'Pesaro, and the recently opened exhibition of the Fundazione Prada at Ca' Corner della Regina. All of them amazing buildings full of Art treasures. The area is also full of nice places to rest and have a spritz or a bite to eat around Campo San Giacomo Dell'Orio.

Ca' San Giorgio is a beautiful building close to the waters of the Grand Canal. The rooms are spacious -except the ones on the ground floor- and very well furnished. Mini bar, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, TV and safety box. The bathroom was kitted out with lovely organic toiletries. The beds are super comfy and everything is impeccable and clean. There is also a lounge area downstairs with a computer available to guests.

Breakfast is generous and enough to satisfy even the biggest appetite. It is served in a very comfortable room and has a selection of juices, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, ham and cheese, breads, toast, fresh croissants, jam, tea, coffee, milk, biscuits and for the chocolate lovers…Nutella! Everything is fresh and topped up constantly. The atmosphere at breakfast time is very friendly and you can also enjoy nice music, sometimes 80's hits (kidding), selected by Ana who I had the pleasure to meet. I am very grateful for all her attentions. She gave us a very warm welcome, nice talk and she also recommended several places and restaurants. Not only that she went through the trouble of booking a table at a nearby restaurant the night of my birthday. I'll say it again: the service is excellent.

I would recommend Ca 'San Giorgio mainly to anyone wanting to have a different experience in a less known but beautiful area of the city. And also to those who appreciate the quality of a proper rest at the end of the day. Something so important in a city as exhausting as Venice.
