My mum had stayed here twice in the past and highly recommended it because of its exceptional price - only 90E a night for a double room (shared bathroom) - and location. It's a few minutes' walk from St Mark's and close to the canal boat stops (easy access to the train station and airport). While it is a little daggy and down-at-heel; with the classic old Venetian florals, heavy dark wood furniture, a creaky/uneven staircase and hard bed and pillows, we didn't mind. It's a super-old building and it's amazing that anything in Venice is till standing really! The owner/manager Nicos, his brother and sister are charming, speak a few languages and are happy to answer questions, guide and help you. There's a great late night eatery called Bacchus nearby, excellent for an emergency panini or vino. The view out of our window onto the canal, and hearing the gondoliers singing along on a regular basis, was a highlight; so romantic and amazing for a first-time visitor. The slightly surly late night doorman doesn't do them any favours though.
