I stayed here for a long weekend as a birthday get-away. After reading about this hotel on Trip Advisor I certainly came here with high expectations and was not disappointed!!
ROOM: PLUSES
The room was fantastic! Each of the 12 rooms are named after the months of the year. We stayed in 'December' room. Very opulent and luxurious and with the canal right outside the window!! We had a mini bar with snacks and cold drinks but sadly no tea and coffee facilities in our classic room. The TV was mounted on the ceiling and they had made a feature of the beautiful wood beams. The room itself was spacious, we had a separate dressing area and a lovely stone tiled bathroom with the usual complimentary body lotions, dressing gowns, slippers and soft towels. Ipod docking station and safe were also provided. Each day we could watch the gondolas pass our window and some of them played accordions or sang as they passed which was really lovely to hear.
ROOM: MINUS: The one slight downside of the rooms is that the TV did not offer any english-speaking channels. Just Italian tv, which is a bit of an ear-sore if left on for too long. Would have been nice to catch up on the news back home but again, we didnt come to Venice to watch TV so it was not really an issue.
Note: As with most Venician properties, natural light is limited because of the close proximity to other buildings. We didnt feel this affected our enjoyment or comfort as during daylight hours we were out and about. The room itself was nicely lit and you could adjust the lighting according to what kind of mood you wanted to set.
LOCATION: PLUS: Firstly the location of this hotel is excellent. Very easy 5-10 minute walk to San Marco taking you along many intriguing shops and restaurants and you can opt for several different routes via various squares which makes it always a very pleasant walk. It took us about 15-20 minutes leisurely walk to get to Rialto bridge.
PLUS: The Hotel is quietly situated on a less busy part of San Marco district, just behind the Theatro so we never experienced any problems with noise during our stay. The only noise we experienced at all was the occasional Gondolier passing our room singing to his clients or playing an accordion - hardly a bad thing!!
LOCATION: MINUSES: The only SLIGHT issue we had was that the hotel is not marked from the front and is very easy to miss unless you know exactly where you are going (which at the same time is a plus as it is quite a hidden little gem). We initially walked from San Marco to our hotel when we first arrived and had trouble locating it. We happened upon it entirely by chance after seeing someone in a Hotel uniform standing outside. The only sign that it is actually a hotel is the little placard with 4 stars on the wall. There is a recessed entrance hall with some glass doors which are labeled AD Place. These are the only signed parts of the hotel. Once you arrive however, it soon becomes easy to locate and we never lost it again! The Hotel staff also provided a detailed map and marked where we were which was useful.
HOTEL FACILITIES:
PLUSES: Aside from the beautiful decor and convenient location all the hotel staff we encountered were very friendly and spoke good English. They were happy to advise us on good places to eat and visit and were always welcoming.
PLUS: It was my birthday during my stay and they sent me a complimentary bottle of champagne and nibbles on a silver platter! Kicked off a wonderful stay in Venice!
PLUS: The breakfast was a plentiful, self-service, affair with continental hams and cheeses and bacon and eggs as well as a good range of cereals, fruits and patisserie. All fresh and regularly replenished.
HOTEL FACILITIES
MINUS: The hotel doesn't have a proper 'bar' so you cant really get an individual glass of wine at night. Their 'bar' is located in a bit of a corridor off the lobby so not the greatest setting to have a nightcap. They do sell wine by the bottle however and are happy to bring it to your room. I don't know about other drinks options.
MINUS: The dining room has limited space. There are 12 rooms at the hotel however there are only 6 table settings (or there were when we were staying). On our first morning we had to wait for someone to finish before we could sit and eat. The waiter did however offer to take our breakfast to our room for us which we would have been happy to do so if a space hadn't become available.
CONCLUSION:
I would highly recommend this beautiful hotel to anyone wanting to really have a really special Venetian experience. The size of the place makes it a very intimate and memorable setting for any occasion and I would certainly stay here again on a return trip. I have stayed in many European 4* hotels... many fall short of their grading, however this hotel lived up to every expectation and more.
