Just returned from an excellent week skiing in Courmayeur, Italy. The hotel was reasonably priced with internet reductions through Inghams and was satisfactory as far as ski accomodation was concerned. The place was very clean and the food was of a reasonable standard, the only complain that we had, was there was insufficient quantities available of certain buffet items. You needed to be early for evening meals or your would not have the selection expected. Also every evening meal was accompanied by cold veg selected from a chilled counter with the salads - strange I thought. These problems could easily be overcomed by the hotel owners if they wanted to do so. Nevertheless, we ate quite well and was served by a very polite waiter and his helper during the week.
The hotel is well placed, about 50 yards from the pedestrian streets of the town but situated on the other end from the main cable car station. This was the main problem as the ski bus situation is really non existant and whats more you have to pay 90 cents each way if you did happen to see one. Tip - leave your skis up the mountain in a store and walk through the town in suitable gear.
Ski area was good if a bit limited for a week but we had great falls of snow especially during the trip to nearby Chamonix (nearly a metre of powder in places, which caused them to shut the mountain early because of avalanche risks - never mind we had a blast for a few hours).
Resorts nearby include La Thuile - good cruising sking with cold conditions maintaining the snow. If you travel there head off to he 'skiacross' type run under the first chair lift that drops down into La Rosiere (fun like no other), Pila - with its varied terrain was very interesting for a day.
There are other ski areas in the Aosta valley which I have skied before such as Cervinia and the Monte Rosa areas of Gressoney and Champoluc which are all delightful.
My son and my self had a great week (I kept up pretty well I might add) its just a shame that the season is so short and we will probably have to wait until next year for more fun in the snow.
Whats more, Chris the Inghams rep was the most efficient rep that I have encountered over the many years of skiing trips (and shes Welsh as well, although this did not influence me).
