We have just returned from our sixth hiking trip in the Alps, and spent one night in Courmayeur after finishing a section of the Tour du Mont Blanc. On the basis of other reviews I was looking forward to our night at the Hotel Bouton D'Or and everything was even better than I expected. We arrived hot and tired and were shown a perfectly fine room with a shower but decided that we really wanted to soak in a bath, and we were graciously moved to a lovely room with a big bath and a window overlooking the church steeple. We relaxed in the outdoor terrace savoring the view and enjoying a quiet drink. The parlor and other public spaces in the hotel were lovely, but we did not linger in them as we were off to explore the town and have dinner. Later in the evening when I mentioned to our host that we wanted to have an early breakfast in order to catch the first bus to La Palud for the cable car ride to Ponte Heilbroner and over to Chamonix, he said that he would be happy to do that but that it would be a shame to miss the full breakfast. He offered to drive us to the lift so that we would not be rushed and be able to enjoy breakfast. And what a feast in was! He and his brother are pastry chefs whose artistry was supplemented by a bounty of meats, local cheeses, breads, jams, juices, cereals, egg dishes, and more. Two days later we stayed at a 5-star hotel in Turin that had an excellent breakfast, but it could not hold a candle to the quality, and beauty of the Bouton D'Or breakfast. After this wonderful meal, we were driven to the lift and left with a desire to return to this lovely hotel soon. What an enjoyable place to stay!
