“Brilliant hotel - but with a couple of slight improvements could be outstanding.”
We went through Crystal to get this hotel - not the Crystal we were used to. The reps were dismal, rude and unprofessional - another story that is being dealt with. We went with another party of 2 who had a room on the 1st floor next to us.
Rception and rooms:
On entry to the hotel we could instantly tell we were onto a winner - clean, wooden and charming reception with the owner greeting us with a smile and showing us to our room. What instantly hit you when you entered the room was the cleanliness and smell. Wooden floors and wood was the theme and we found the secret to the amazing smell - a couple of subtle air freshener sticks! I get the impression that not all rooms are the same. Our friends' room wasn't but was roughly the same size. This is a good thing considering the charm of the hotel. A Premier Inn style of layout would certainly not suffice and the owners have got it spot on with this. However, comparing our room to next door's room we were surprised to see we had not got a bath or a chest of drawers - and our telly was a lot smaller. Telly aside - wasn't really bothered about that, but it would have been nice to have a hot bath to soak away the aches after a day on the slopes. And to have a chest of drawers or more storage space would have been nice to have considering other rooms had these amenities. However this was not a major issue and certainly nothing to complain about. Just something that the owners could consider - a level of consistency without compromising the individual charm of the rooms. Another thing - being on the 1st floor there was a bit of street noise - didn't really bother us and I'm a light sleeper. But anyone really concerned should request a higher room. There is a kettle and mugs in the rooms, but take some PG tips & buy some milk from the supermarket to make a brew. They also advertise wifi in rooms at a cost but could not get it - so they refunded me my €2 (for 5 hours of usage). That said we were very happy with our room - was sizeable, warm, cozy and very very clean.
Breakfast:
Probably the most disappointing part of our stay. There wasn't much of it, only cornflakes and muesli for cereal with ham, salami and cheese to go with Italian bread and rolls. Orange juice was available and was always replenished. There were soft and hard boiled eggs but these often went quickly without being replenished straight away. The worst part was the toaster. A 2-piece toaster that takes an age to toast is not sufficient for a hotel. This meant there were queues and a few unhappy people. Again, I am open minded and understand that we are in Europe and ham/cheese/croissants are part of the norm here and definitely would not start demanding a fry-up but (a note to the owners) GET A DECENT TOASTER! Oh and they will make you a tasty omlette if you request one.
Location:
You literally cannot get more central than this hotel. All the good bars, restaurants are on the doorstep. Because of the proximaty to everything the bitter cold weather ( we had -23C!) you do not get cold for too long. Yeti Bar have a happy hour from 5-6 where you can get a pitcher of any beer for €10. Considering the inflated prices in Cervinia this is cheap. The hotel is across the road from the slopes. With a superb (but slightly smelly!) boot room you can lock your skis away safely. You must pay a €20 deposit though - fair enough I'd say in case you lose your locker key.
Even though it's only a few minutes walk to the lifts the altitude makes it exhausting! You can virtually ski back to the hotel though.
BUT - and this is an important factor to consider - this hotel is not suitable for beginners. Beginenr skiers that require ski school and cannot ski to ski school (situated at Plan Maison) must get a gondola to Plan Maison which is about a 15-20min walk with skis up some steep steps and road. This is exhausting and quite dangerous when there is snow on the steps. Again at altitude this is exhausting. You can ski to Plan Maison from the main lifts but it requires taking 2 lifts and skiing down to ski school. Something that beginners simply cannot do.
Facilities:
There is a bar and cafe/restaurant in the hotel and the prices are quite reasonable.
There is a wellness centre with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi. But this costs €8 per hour!
Wifi - €2 for 5 hours.
Overall - superb hotel, very clean, friendly staff. We were very pleased with our stay and would stay gain. Hotel probably is too good to be a 3 star, but if they improve the following:
- Free wifi
- Free use of the wellness centre
- Consistency of facilities in all the rooms.
- Decent toaster
Do these little things and this could be a very comfortable to high end 4 star.
