“This Can Not Be a 4 Star Hotel! Avoid Our Mistake!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

What a disappointment! We were looking forward to staying in a cozy, historical castle with a lovely view of the Meran valley and enjoying the amenities of a 4 star hotel. It became immediately apparent after we were shown our rooms that the rating of this hotel was wholly incorrect. First of all, one of our rooms had ants--not a few, but a veritable ant highway leading across the floor. When we informed the staff, they showed us new a new room, which was more comfortable than the first, but after returning from dinner, we found that it, too, had ants--this time coming from the bathroom into the bedroom. The furniture in all rooms was a jumble of mismatched chairs, chests and tables that looked like they had come from a flea market, the bathroom fixtures were not 'charming' old but 'in need of repair' and 'replacement' old. When we went to discuss the matter with the management the lady of the house was very snippy and informed us that the ants were as much a part of the place as its history! She did not allow us to cancel our booking after the one night, instead insisting that we pay nearly the entire sum for all our booked days. We had a valid complaint about the rating being misleading and that there were ants in two out of the four rooms we had seen. She wouldn't budge. Although the other staff members were nice enough, the whole place had a sad, dreary feel to it as if the whole place was barely hanging on financially. Even the meals were basic and lacking the finesse of a four star hotel. Certainly, the history of the place is interesting and the location quiet, but this hotel can not be recommended for its comfort, service or food quality. There are other far better choices in the Meran area, especially in this price category.

“first and last time for us”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2008

This is the one time we were arriving very late. We called to let them know and arrived just before 9 at night so we missed the restaurant. The lady who checked us in was very nice. We had two rooms with balconies that were very warm. My son particularly complained about the heat. We didn't expect A/C but a fan would have been nice considering how warm it was. Of course it had the typical set up on the bed of a down comforter. In the morning I explored the place and it is beautiful and charming. The whole area in the vineyards was great for photos. Breakfast started at 8. We were used to 7-7:30. I am a coffee addict and an early riser. On the trip I had been coming down to breakfasts at 7-7:30 whenever they started and getting coffee to take to my room then would come down later when my son was ready for breakfast. Here I went down with my big coffee mug I travel with at 7:45 and asked for coffee and the guy told me to come back in 15 minutes(not very nicely either). Then we find out in both our rooms we had no hot water for the showers(which were very small also). The hotel was very empty and maybe they didn't turn on the hot water heater since there were so few guests.Too top that off this was our most expensive stay on our whole trip- I will not be going back to this castle but Merano was beautiful and well worth a visit.

“Charming Dolomite hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2008

We found this a charming hotel in one of the areas 300 plus castles. The entire staff, owners, waiters etc went out of their way to be helpful, the building was full of antiques and objets of interest. The room was commodious, though one of the cheapest available with lovely views over the vineyards. Buffet breakfasts were of a high standard with lots of choice and dinners in the evening were excellent. The cost , as is normal in the Dolomites, was for half board and we thought we got excellent value for money

“magical location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2007

Schloss Labers has an intriguing, if chequered past, and the castle itself seems infused with its own history. Ancient portraits and family trees adorn the walls, and the wood panelling and grand staircases give an impression of ancient Teutonic grandeur.
Our room had a large balcony overlooking the garden and the mountains beyond. The views were spectacular. The pool was blissful, set just above the castle's vineyards, also facing Merano's valley.
The food was good if not excellent, the service impeccable.

“Magic, once again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2007

Stayed there again for the week-end of the half marathon. Can only repeat previous praise, only this time the food was even better (new executive chef, apperently). Also, absolutely stunning weather this time, so we were able to use the pool, already in late April!

We had a nice room with a fairly large balcony - but not all rooms have a balcony. However, I have now stayed here in four different rooms and all had a spectacular view, including the ones not overlooking the valley.

  • Liked — The building (castle), the location, the view, the garden
  • Disliked — Bathroom in this room was comparatively small
