“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

This is the second time I stayed at this Hotel. The receptionist gave me a complementary upgrade. Once again the mini bar was well stocked, the bathroom clean, and the room nice and cosy in winter. Our Balcony had a Christmas tree. You can get the 1A bus to infromt of the hotel from the airport. You can also get the bus to the Orio shopping centre. A Seven Euro ticket gets you 3 days unlimited bus and Fenicular travel. The fenicular is about 100m away and the best way to get to the bottom of the cita alta. The Jardino restaurant beside the hotel is excellent at lunch time and very reasonable. In the evening it is the best place to hang out with Prosecco about 7Euro. The breakfast selection in the hotel is excellent, staff are very professional.

“Lobby and rooms do not match”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

I've been here many times, time to write a review.

Location is great (close to funicular etc), service is great and it looks like a nice hotel when You walk in.

But the rooms, at least the ones I've been sent are old, really worn out. Bathroom the same. Basically everything works, but they scream for a renewal.

Breakfast is good.

“Big disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

I have been traveling to Bergamo quite often for buisness. I typically stay at the Arli but have stayed at most of the other hotels in the area that are of similar quality. I've always been intriqued by the San Marco because the lobby looks very nice and I have heard the rooftop restruant is excellent. The room I had at the Arli this time had no internet access in the room (wireless at the Arli can be spotty) so I decided to check out and try the San Marco. I was very dissappointed by how old the rooms are in this hotel. Like many of the other hotels in the area (Arli, Best Western) some of the rooms are updated and some are not. I was given a very old room on the 3rd floor. The day I checked in the floor I was on and my room smelled kind of musty, I think maybe it was from the heating system being used for the first time that year. They shower didn't drain right, the water pressure was very bad, the doors don't lock themselves (when you leave the room you have to put your key back in to lock the door), the light fixtures are all 30+ years old. To top it off I never could get the internet to connect even though I had a pretty good signal. I am a computer programmer and travel quite frequently so I usually am pretty good at getting these sort of things to work, I also couldn't get my tablet or iphone to connect to the wireless so I am pretty sure it was something wrong on their end. Also the bed was pretty hard, I think that's more of an Italian thing as most hotels I stay at in Europe have the same issue.

On the positive side the room did have a small balcony (no good view though), the breakfast was much better than the Arli or the Best Western. The staff were all very courteous, I left my bag in the morning before I checked in and latet that evening when I was given my room the bag was already in the room waiting for me. The good staff cannot make up for the fact they should finish remodeling all the roooms so I will not be returning to this hotel again.

“Just fine... kind of expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

This is my third stay at the Excelsior San Marco in the last 3 years.
The front-desk people are very kind and both check-in and check-out are super fast.

It's a pity that the rooms are so old fashioned; I wouldn't dare to say they are uncomfortable, but clearly they need some improvements: bigger beds, better lighting and a comfortable space to work.
The bathroom is just fine, though they do not provide anything but shampoo... the hair dryer is a nightmare.

In spite of all these, it's still a "just fine" option in Bergamo due to its fantastic location. In my opinion, it's the only thing that gives support to the price.

Room Tip: Corner suites are very uncomfortable. Make sure you get one on the front or facing the Cittá Alta.

“Great location of hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

This was my 3rd stay at this hotel over 4 years and I would say the hotel is looking a bit tired.
Rooms and general areas are in need of updating. On the positive side the hotel is in an ideal location. Close to funicular to old town and close to main shops. The room we had was very clean and comfortable and I would say breakfast was adequate. Roof top restaurant was very expensive and we were a little disappointed that you were not allowed in there even for just a drink to admire the amazing views. From the airport there is a bus which stops very close to the hotel (Stop no 3 - 1 stop before funicular) and only cost 2euros per person. Taxi driver was going to charge 22euros so beware! I try to time my visit around weekend 7th-9th October when the Mercanti Festival is on in the city. There are wonderful food and many craft items and much more stalls which line the main area and are open until late each evening making the visit even more interesting. Bergamo is a beautiful city and the contrast between the old Citte Alta and the new town is well worth a trip.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are on the left side of hotel so to get a better view of old town try to request from...
