I was returning to Rome in late November after five years, and last time I stayed in a budget hotel that had it's quirks. So I decided to splurge a little more this time, and after looking at all the options, I liked the location and perceived quality of the Hotel Diocleziano.
And I was not disappointed - I would not even bother looking for another hotel in Rome, as HD suited all my needs. I like the idea of being close to Roma Termini (train station), and this hotel couldn't get much closer, with it being located virtually across the road.
The rooms were excellent, proof that you get what you pay for in Europe. The room I had was massive, with a large anteroom and bathroom. I slept well there, and only woke to my alarm. The wi-fi was steady and did not disconnect at any time during my stay. I am returning to Rome in February and have booked again at HD.
The hotel is right next door to the side walls of the villa that forms part of Diocletian's Baths, and was handy when I had an hour or so to kill before taking the train to Fiumicino Airport (the hotel even gave me a late check-out). I could get to the centre of old Rome (forum) very quickly by train, and reasonably quickly by foot, as it was a walk down the Via Cavour.
The breakfast is a buffet, and while I usually don't like buffets, this one was ok, and I got a decent breakfast. The staff were very helpful, and although they hadn't readied my room when I arrived at about 1pm, I went and got some lunch and came back, and my luggage was in the room waiting for me.
I would recommend any traveller looking for good accommodation in the 3-4 star bracket to look no further.
