We arrived here and were greeted by the porter who did not speak English. Admittedly we did not speak Italian either, but we had been led to believe from an email that the owner who did speak English would be meeting us there. Nonetheless we were handed a piece of paper which explained who the porter was and what the set up of this place was. Francesco the porter did his best to see to our initial needs, I had thought that there was a safety deposit box in the room, he didn't understand what this was so immediately got Mauro the owner on the phone for me.
This was good. However, once speaking to Mauro I was not so happy. He simply told me that nothing had ever gone missing, and that it wasn't a full blown hotel so there would be no safety deposit box. I felt like an idiot for asking and it wasn't the best start to my stay. I was concerned about this as all the rooms had the same, very simple 1-lever, key. Which meant any of the other guests could have gotten into our room if they had wanted. If you are concerned about security this perhaps isn't the place to stay for you.
However, Mauro the owner was very kind on our last day. We had some time to kill before our flight, so we asked if we could delay our departure from 11am (check-out time) to 1pm. Mauro was extremely helpful, and shifted around the time of his maid such that we didn't even need to vacate the room at 11am. Very much appreciated.
The other slight downside to this accommodation is the fact that we were asked to pay cash on arrival. For a stay with a family, or for a longer stay this could mean having to carry a very large amount of money in cash. We were nervous with carrying 300 euros in our rucksack. I do not know however if it would have been possible to pay beforehand by paypal or something.
The room was excellent. A very very big double room. The huge wardrobe which was provided would have been excellent had we been staying for a lot longer, although not many hangers were provided (10 at a maximum). The bed was very soft (which my girlfriend really liked) although it was very creaky. A slight downside was that we were only provided with one pillow. However we didn't ask for another one, so it may have been possible to be provided with another one had we asked Mauro over the phone. The balcony was very nice, and we got a view onto the courtyard complex beneath. Beware if you're scared of heights, this place is on the sixth floor! The shutters on the windows outside were superb. They blocked out all the light at night time which made the room practically pitch black. There was only a little light entering through the door. Although not the Mite's fault, the walls of the bedroom were very thin, and we could hear dogs barking, along with the construction work which started at around 8.30 each morning in the neighbouring apartment. We were getting up early for tours and sightseeing, but this would have been highly annoying if we had wanted a long lie in each day.
There was a kitchen which was very well equipped. You could quite easily cook here if you wanted to. We made packed lunches each day and ate our own breakfast cereal. The breakfast provided in the price consisted of only a croissant and a drink from the cafe across the street. Anything else from the cafe was at our expense. This was not explained to us before booking the room over Expedia, so I was rather disappointed when I discovered that this was all the breakfast we would be receiving.
There was a nice living room with a fairly new Apple Mac computer for communal use. This was a very nice touch and was helpful when we were looking for things to do in Rome.
Unfortunately the bathroom really upset our stay. There was a bad smell of drains in the morning, and the shower closest was covered in a black substance on the grout. When I spoke to Maruo about this he suggested I told the maid, who simply shrugged her shoulders at me. I then asked if we could use the alternative bathroom. He said no as there we two other families using it already. When we were due to depart, my girlfriend showed the bathroom to Mauro, and he simply said that the bathroom had been like that for years. To us it was a problem, to the point that we were wearing flip flips in the shower. I wouldn't keep my home shower like that, and would not expect it from an otherwise clean and tidy place which I we were paying good money for. (300 euros for two people for three nights stay).
The location was excellent. I would recommend the Dorling Kindsley Top 10 Rome guidebook as it really helped us get the most out of the area. There was a supermarket fairly nearby, and some of the restaurants were fantastic. It certainatly felt like Rome. The area had a lot of character and felt very safe.
The best thing about this place were the shutters in the room. They were fantastic. I didn't very much like the lack of breakfast, and feel like expedia and the hotel website should have informed us of this before hand.
