“Avoid Avoid Avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2010

We never actually got to the hotel. We booked via phone and email in October 2009, gave card details and had several emails confirming the reservation. We had 7 people spread over 3 rooms

2 days before travelling I emailed the hotel to double check and Guess what?, our reservation had disappeared,

Sheer incompetance and no help in sorting the problem out

Luckily we were able to find alternative accommodation via lastminute.com

“staff steal and lie”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2008

The hotel was OK,, not good and not bad. It seems that there was a lot of difference between the rooms because we were staying here as a group and some people had jacuzzi's, whereas others only had a simple shower.

The district was not so fine. In the daytime the whole area is an illegal vending area, so all you see is cheap bags and sunglasses from China. The trainstation is right next to the hotel which is practical. There was no noise from the street, which is always great for a hotel. Breakfast was edible, but not high standard.

When I left, I left a expensive woollen vest behind by accident. I had purchased it back home and the pricetag was still on it. I called the hotel from the airport and heard that they had found it. They promissed to send it to me when they got my address by e-mail. Two e-mails and three weeks later, they were still pretending to never have received my e-mails. So I sent a fax, and they claimed they didn't receive it either. So I sent a second faxmessage and called straight away. The said they received my fax and were going to send my vest it to me straight away. I never received my property and when I called after that they told me to call back or not pretended not to understand or not to speak English. I can only conclude that the staff are thieving and lying.

“Not a 4 star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2008

We spent 2 nights here before travelling on to Capri. We chose it because of the location and this was great for us to access the trains to Pompeii and Herculaneum and also just a short trip away from the ferry terminal to Capri.
The hotel was clean and in a good state of decor. We had expected the area to be a bit rough being near the train station, this was the case, but we were careful and this did not cause us any problems.
I would not rate this as a 4 star hotel and the staff were disinterested although not totally unhelpful.
We had a huge cockroach in our bathroom which was rather unpleasant but given the present difficulties with rubbish collection in Naples maybe this was to be expected.
The breakfast was very, very poor. I asked for some cheese and ham and was told it would arrive soon, I waited 45 minutes - it never did arrive and when I asked again was told 'domani' (tomorrow).
Would not stay here again.

“Very good experience at Sant'Angelo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2007

This hotel was great. We read the reviews on TripAdvisor after we had booked a package deal and were terrified that our holiday would be ruined. However, upon arrival we were greeted by friendly, English-speaking staff who were very capable and helpful. The room was clean and well appointed and we had a lovely stay. We experienced none of the "bait and switch" issues that some others did, however we did call and confirm our reservations ahead of time to ensure there weren't any issues with the hotel.
The area is probably not the best if you're not used to staying in a city - you have to be aware of pick pockets and street vendors who may try to sell you dodgy goods, but that is standard when you're travelling in major metropolitan areas outside the US.
The location is great to tour the Spaccanapoli and Centro Storico. It's also great if you're planning day-trips by train to Pompei, Sorrento, etc. The downside is that it's quite far from the area near the bay with all the bars & restaurants.

  • Liked — Location to historic area, train station for day trips, staff was helpful
  • Disliked — Distance from bay area bars/restaurants

“Frustrating experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2007

Two couples stayed here on Saturday, September 29, 2007 before our flight back to USA. The hotel is high-tech and newly renovated, BUT there was no hot water both days and the air-conditioning was not working. There were three other couples complaining - but the staff appeared to not understand. It seems from the other couples that there hadn't been hot water for two days previously and the air-conditioning only worked in some rooms. This area of Naples is not the safest and one couple was moving because the safe did not function in their room. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant, but neither were open. We spent a beautiful 10 days on the Amalfi Coast and this was a frustrating way to end it. A hotel without hot water is not pleasant!!
