“Great hotel, especially for the price, wonderful staff, ever so SLIGHTLY let down by a few minor points..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011

Pros : Beautifully appointed, clean, spacious rooms, helpful, informative staff, location not far from Metro, affordable/reasonably priced, free breakfast*
Cons: slight wear and tear in bathroom, poor breakfast, gym completely dysfunctional, no English speaking TV channels (not even anyENglish speaking news programmes)

ROOMS

I want to start off by saying that I loved this aparthotel overall in spite of its flaws. This is because I rate the importance of nice rooms quite highly, and the rooms were well cleaned, very spacious for our family of four, and the furniture was large, of a high quality. The kitchenette was a nice off-white, steel-effect microwave (although we never used ours) - the room came together nicely.

The bathroom was beautiful also , lovely ceramic countertop basin, on top of wooden cabinet, small black mosaic tiling in shower (no bath, but that was fine with us) - portable shower head. The down side about the shower was that shower door only closed part of the way, so there was a huge gap and water sprays out onto the floor outside the bathroom - over time I could see that the bottom of the wall had sustained some water damage, and the bathroom cabinet also. Had they installed a proper shower door this would have been avoided altogether.

The room has "climate control" which I guess is the same as air conditioning - I found it was a bit difficult to master. Most of the time it was either blowing out hot air (not what you want in hot weather) or too cold. Took a bit of time to know how to get it to work well, but once you master it, it does the job.

LOCATION

The hotel is not in the centre of action, but it is about 5-10 mins walk away from a Metro station which gets you where you want to be. Hotel is also at bottom of a hill - I didn't mind because I feel I needed the exercise lol, but if you aren't too fit or good on your feet, it could prove tricky. Not many nice shops and restaurants in the area, you probably need to go central to see those, but there is a great Chinese restaurant about 5-10 mins walk from the hotel. Ask receptionist for Da-fa restaurant, if you fancy a break from paella and bocadillos lol

STAFF

Can't fault them. Helpful and friendly and family-centric. One lady in particular (my daughter reckons her name is Kelly, but I am not so sure) was really lovely with my children, gave them pencils and pictures to colour in, and lolly. How I wish I had taken note of her name, she was delightful. Overall they were all nice and informative.

OTHER FEATURES

Breakfast:

Disappointing. Consists of brown or white bread, butter or jams, tinned fruit, processed meats and salami- or processed cheese, plain yoghurt, tinned fruit, croissants and pain or chocolats. I would have killed for some fresh fruit, or a slice of bacon!! If I had paid extra for the breakfast, I would have wanted to get my money back - luckily I got it for free because I booked via the hotel website. When you have children, skipping brekkie is not an option sadly.

Gym

Very disappointing. It's in the next building, on the roof, which WOULD have been great if anything worked - but nothing did!! Except the free weights of course. And there is no-one there to help you figure it out, unless you want to go all the way down the stairs again and back to the hotel to ask the receptionist how to work the machines (which I couldn't be bothered to do).

Altogether I really enjoyed my stay - I would recommend this to anyone except someone who wanted to use a gym, or wanted to eat a hearty breakfast ha ha.

Room Tip: Book via the hotel website and breakfast is free!

“Modern & beautiful :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2011

This hotel was really big, modern, clean and nice. Our room looked like a condo, was a 2-floor room, 2 tvs, and small "living room", and a huge bed downstairs. I enjoyed staying there for four nights!

“I will stay there again when visiting Madrid”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

The reception had friendly, helpful and English speaking receptionists 24/7.
Our arrival at midnight from the airport posed no problem.

The sofa bed for my daughter was OK for her, although that's because she's quite small, I wasn't able to sit on it without the springs sinking to the floor. Our beds were better, although two single beds shoved together doesn't really do the same as a double bed. There was adequate bedding and the bedding was changed as needed by the maids.

The bathroom was insanely small, not helped by the fact that the door opened into it. When you turned up the water tap in the sink, it sent out a fine jet in all directions that completely soaked the floor and the toilet tissues. It really does only fit one person at a time and it seemed impossible to use the sink or the shower without drenching the entire room.

The hotel provided a coffee maker and individual packs for a cup at 2 Euros a time. There was a fridge full of temptations like chocolates and alcohol that were just as overpriced. However, there was no pressure to use any of this. There was plenty of room in the fridge for our own drinks, milk and other basic groceries. There was a small kitchen area consisting of the fridge, a microwave and a sink.
There were plenty of electrical sockets.

There was a flat panel TV that showed about a dozen Spanish Language channels.

The wifi was reasonably good. I used it a lot and only had issues with it slowing down once during the week I was there. Even then it was relatively short lived. The signal was mediocre, my tablet lost it's connection at one end of the room, although I could use my laptop anywhere.

The room itself was spacious and clean. The maids came in every day, tidied up, mopped up and changed the towels and bed linen as required.

We booked the room on the hotels own web site, as a result we got free breakfasts. They were served from about 7:30 to 10:30 and did tend to get a bit crowded toward the end of the morning although we never had to wait for a seat. The selection was OK, but breakfast bar itself was too small and one of the tables was far too close. There were one or two staff each morning running it and they were helpful and friendly. The one's we met didn't speak any English, but the whole process was so straightforward that it didn't matter.

There were a selection of Spanish newspapers available in reception and a large screen television playing a Spanish 24 hour news station in the breakfast area.

The reception area was basic but tasteful, comfortable, spacious and very clean.

There was a gym available but I we didn't bother looking at it. There's an outdoor pool that is open during the warmer months.

The area isn't geared up for tourists. The hotel is at the bottom of a very step road that leads onto the Calle de Alcalá, that is one of the main arterial roads leading into the centre of Madrid. It´s about three miles outside the city centre. There is the ciudad lineal metro station about 10 minutes walk from the hotel, that will get you into the city in about 10 minutes. The Metro goes all over the city and navigating it is easy and cheap once you get the hang of it.

We needed wheelchair access and had to walk to the Pueblo Nuevo metro station about five minutes further down the road to get access via a lift. Only about 1 in 3 of the metro stations are wheelchair accessible so it could mean that disabled users

I wouldn't advise driving anywhere in Madrid. The driving is very aggressive (surprisingly as everybody seems very polite and easy going). The parking is breathtakingly bad. People just seemed to abandon their cars wherever they please, on junctions, on crossings anywhere. Double parking is a regular site even on the busiest main roads. In just a few days I saw a few instances of people parking clumsily and bumping into other cars.

The shops are not geared up for dealing with tourists and you'd need at least a basic grasp of Spanish to get by. There are plenty of local eating places with Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Mexican and Fast food from KFC, McDonalds and Burger King. Don't expect the staff there to speak English, they probably won't.

There's an American Diner type place at the top of the road just five minutes walk from the hotel called VIPS again the staff only speak Spanish but they do at least offer an English version of their menu for the linguistically challenged.

There's a large shopping arcade by the Linea Ciudad station with a good selection of modern retail outlets and a supermarket. They also have a fast food court with KFC, Burger King etc. There's also a cinema complex there, showing all the latest Hollywood movies dubbed in Spanish.

The area itself felt safe during the day and night and there was always a very visible police presence. There wasn't any evidence of the gangs of pickpockets that are a regular feature in central Madrid.

The hotel is about ten minutes from the airport, unless you take a taxi. We have relatives who have lived their lives in Madrid and the airport taxi drivers still try to bump up the fair and take the long way round. As a visitor to the city, it's pretty much a given that you will be ripped off if you take a taxi from the airport. The metro service is safe, fast and reliable and the best option for most visitors. Taxis around the rest of the city are generally safe to use.

There's lot's to see and do in the city of Madrid, we were there to visit family so it wasn't high on our agenda. However, the city is full of beautiful buildings and plazas with cafes and restaurants on every street and the theatres, art galleries, state buildings etc are amongst the best in Europe.

“Space to”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

We stayed with our son in the duplex family suite for a week and in the triple suite for one night.

Positives: The hotel was clean and modern, the pool was small but fun (water was cool even in the heat of summer). The rooms were both specious and comfy. In the triple suite, our son loved having his own bedroom and TV. We loved having space to spread out, eat breakfast, relax, and have visitors. It's a short walk to the Metro and there are several markets nearby.

Negatives: the bathrooms are tiny and that half-door in the shower meant the floor was always soaked. There's no business center (public computer) for internet access. And while it was a HUGE room at a great price, it's not close to the center of town.

During our stay there was a transit strike and it took us 2 buses and 90 minutes to get to Plaza Del Sol. While we were very happy with the hotel, next time, we might stay closer to the action.

“Great place for family at a great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

As many people have already said, spacious rooms, nice staff and bit far. However also echoing another reviewer, the price and the comfort of the room makes up for the distance. Also the metro is so easy to maneuver in Madrid that it really wasn't a big deal at all especially since the metro stop is like 10 minutes walk only. The only complaint I have is the bathroom is tiny, you can't even open the door all the way. Poor design considering the rest of the room is so spacious. My teens loved the loft area. I love that we're together but not stumbling over one another!

You walk up the street of the hotel and take a left for the metro, along the way is a convenient store so you can grab bottle water at a non-tourist price. There is also a fruit store on the way. if you take a right there is a VIPs store/restaurant. These seem to be all over Madrid. Its like a 7 Eleven combined with a Friendy's. We ate late lunch there one day when we were too tired after coming back from El Rastro shopping.

The taxi ride will be expensive to/from airport but once again after that if you take the metro it is definitely worth it.
